1454년 페루지아 근처에서 태어난 핀투리키오는 페루지오 공방에 제자로 들어가 시스티나 성당의 천장화를 그리는 것을 도왔고, 이곳에서 보티첼리나 길란다이오를 만나게 된다. 그가 페루지오로부터 배운 공간감은 후에 라파엘로에게 이어지게 된다. 그의 대표작은 교황 알렉산드로 6세 보르지아 거주 궁과 시에나의 피콜로미니 도서관의 프레스코화로 그의 자식적인 화풍을 유감없이 발휘했고, 이후 그의 화풍은 더욱 발전하고 성숙하게 되었다.
