Fragility and Providence"

    "Wings - Fragility and Providence“

It is the second solo exhibition of Juwon Yoon after 12 years since her first show. One might consider such period to be sufficiently long enough to even set her title of an “artist” aside for Juwon, she has been able to commence the second chapter of her life thanks to such unconventional period. Through the second solo exhibition of her career, titled "Wings- Fragility and Providence,” she utilizes her research subject of “patterns” by embedding the element of perception of “life”; a fresh approach that has somewhat been overlooked by artists in the past. A transparent, feather-light wings of a dragonfly, vulnerable creatures of butterflies and moths, which boast delicate yet sophisticated patterns in their wings - not only this reflects Juwon’s initial interest in natural patterns observed in wings of insects, but the fact that such interest has been focused on the smallest living creatures could only have resulted from the phase of “silence.” The wings of a small insect may be a mere repetition of simple patterns for some people but interpreting this in light of the wider meaning of life and creatures, one may well observe variations in a range of spectrum.

In comparison to the work of Damien Hirst, an English artist, who also had an extensive fascination for the complex colors and sophisticated patterns of butterflies, Hirst himself did not focus on the subject of variations. The work of Hirst captures the audience with clear elements of glamour and spectacle on the exterior, as well as throwing a subtle message, which emphasizes the aspect of “finite life” that also goes by the saying of “all good things must come to an end.”

Juwon’s work and expressions of butterflies and moths provide fundamental contrast to the work of Hirst. In what may seem like an extremely similar set of designs or fragile wings at first sight, through a closer and careful observation of subtle differences for each pattern in wings, one may well discover a breath of “life” that is determined by the grandness of the surrounding “spirit.” Such concept shares the fundamental idea of all humans carrying fingerprints, which may resemble each other in form, yet a subtle and delicate difference determines the specific “identity” of each human being. The overwhelming underlying message is that all the variations of identities fundamentally refer to one grand authority of “providence.” Such invisible authority is not bound by any size, scale, nature or space the scope of such intervention applies to even the most fragile wings of insects, as well as to gigantic matters, which we as humans are simply incapable of grasping the mere concept to any extent. Perhaps Juwon may well be a part of this providence; never in the space of 12 years did she lose her faith in her identity of being an artist and it may be the only plausible explanation.

In essence, “The Wing” series is almost a self-portrait of the artist herself. Small and fragile pair of wings as they may seem in its appearance, a certain degree of reflection of the “providence” may well be observed. At the same time, such delicate patterns act as vital parts in creating the ultimate driving force. There is no part that can simply be omitted or considered unnecessary. From such perspective, this explains the transformation of Juwon’s portrait of wings as a perfect “pair” and not being expressed as single units from a certain dimension. A single wing could only make sense from a visual aspect; it acts as no aid in providing a balance, enabling to fly or even in maintaining a life. It is only when “two become one,” the wings can ultimately act in accordance with the fundamental providence. As elegant and intricate as the hundreds of single units of wings there may be, there is simply no purpose within.

Juwon’s work initially focused on the structural elements of color, design and pattern. The second solo exhibition has acted a turning point for her artwork in expressing the elements of spirit and providence. , a piece of work made using OHP films to express nearly 600 insect wings, clearly demonstrates the phase in which the artist’s focus is shifting away from the nature of repetitive patterns to the fundamental substance of materials used, reflecting her unique discovery of underlying providence hidden behind the delicate and fragile patterns used. Senses involving anxiety and tension, as well as elements of hope and excitement, are commonly identified in her artwork of the series. In light of this exhibition being a part of the artist’s overall life and career, one will surely be able to exploit a sense of comfort guided by the providence aforementioned through the emotions derived from the exquisite aspects of wings being highlighted instead of its fragility.
