당신의 오늘은 몇 번째 생일인가요?

보편적인 예로 시작하자면 만남 끝에는 헤어짐이, 탄생 이후에는 죽음이 기다리고 있듯이 무언가 새롭게 시작되는 순간은 끝으로 출발하는 시점과 다르지 않다. 마지막이란 늘 슬픔, 아쉬움, 그리움, 상실감 등이 함께하는 법이지만, 끝은 동시에 새로운 시작이라는 보편적인 위로 대신 몇 가지 질문들을 던져본다. 우리 곁에 머물다 떠나간 존재들이 알고 보니 영영 헤어진 것이 아니었다면? 모르는 사이에 이전과 다른 모습으로, 다른 방식으로 어딘가에서 살아가고 있었다면? 그리고 나와 함께한 시간들이 그가 더 나은 생을 맞이하기 위한 밑거름이 되었다면? 일상에서 당연시하던 이분법적 논리를 조금 환기하는 것만큼 생의 전환점을 형성하기에 좋은 계기는 흔치 않다.

여기, 지금 막 태어나 생일을 맞은 로봇들이 한 자리에 모였다. 다같이 약속이라도 한 듯 화사한 색으로 치장한 자기 모습이 꽤나 마음에 들고 즐거워 보인다. 그런데, 무언가 재미있는 이야기를 감추고 있을 것 같은 느낌에 가까이 들여다보면 새 것 이라기엔 뭔가 석연치 않은 점들이 구석구석 눈에 띈다. 밝은 색채로도 가려지지 않는 미세한 스크래치와 조립의 흔적, 선명히 남아 있는 특정 브랜드의 로고를 통해 우리는 이들이 모습을 바꾸고 예쁜 색을 덮어쓴 전자제품이라는 것을, 처음부터 이렇게 아기자기한 로봇의 모습은 아니었다는 것을 쉽게 알아챌 수 있다. FORI는 버려진 폐기계들이 새로운 생을 시작할 수 있도록 돕는 것이 자신이 하는 일이라고 말한다. 그가 만드는 로봇들의 이전 생이란 기억하고 싶은 순간을 간직하게 돕는 디지털카메라, 말로 다 할 수 없는 마음을 노래로 전해주는 MP3, 상상 속에서나 가능한 일들을 현실로 만들어주는 TV, 소중한 사람의 목소리를 들려주는 핸드폰 등 언제나 다른 존재를 위해 필요한 역할을 반복하는 날들이었다. 그렇게 수명이 다 하고 나면 제품의 형태와 기능을 유지하던 여러 요소들은 작가의 손에 의해 해체되고, 수리되고, 재조립되고, 물감이 덧입혀진다. 그렇게 누구도 예상하지 못한 모습으로 완성된 폐기계들은 다시 살아가기 시작한다. 이쯤 되면 FORI의 작업은 그 과정의 시작부터가 이미 예술작품이었다고 말하기에 충분하겠으나, 작품이 마냥 생기 넘치고 행복에 겨운 모습으로 받아들여지지 않는 이유는 새로운 생을 맞는다는 것은 기약 없는 인내와 희생으로 점철된 결과임을 절절히 설명하고 있기 때문이다.

하나의 존재가 백 번, 천 번의 생을 반복하는 것이 가능하다고 생각하는지에 대한 질문에 작가는 어느 때보다도 해사한 얼굴로 '그렇다. 그리고 그렇기를 바란다'고 답했다. 웃음지을 수 밖에 없는 대답이었다. 누구나 지금보다는 조금 더 자신이 원하는 모습, 원하는 방식으로 살아갈 앞날을 염원하며 살아가니 말이다. 그렇다면 새해를 맞아 이렇게도 생각해보자. 매일 아침 새로운 하루를 시작하는 것 또한 다시 태어나는 것과 같다고 볼 수 있다면, 내 앞에 놓여진 썩 마음에 들지 않는 상황들을 조금은 다른 시선으로 보아도 괜찮지 않을까 라고. 매일 반복하는 수고들은 다음주, 다음달, 그리고 다음 생으로 분명히 이어 질 테니 어느새 FORI의 로봇들만큼이나 예쁜 색으로 둘러싸인 날들을 지내는 스스로를 상상해 보는 것도 좋겠다. 이번 전시를 통해 Happy Rebirth Day를 살아가는 모두가 이전 생의 결실을 맺음과 동시에 다음 생을 맞이하기 위한 좋은 재료들을 모을 수 있기를, 매일 매일이 생일 같은 한 해 지내시길 응원한다. ■ 장서윤 신한갤러리 광화문 큐레이터

이 세상 모든 생명체는 결국 물질들의 집합체이다. 작은 세포들은 집합의 과정을 통해 탄생함과 동시에 타임라인(time-line)을 갖고, 죽음을 맞는다. 인간과 동물은 흙으로 돌아가고 식물은 거름이 된다. 수증기는 비가 되었다가 차갑게 얼어붙고, 다시 공기 중에 흩어지기를 반복한다. 한 존재가 특정한 성질을 띠는 것은 결국 제한된 시간 안에서의 개념이다. 다양한 물질들이 뭉쳐져 만들어진 존재는 일정 시간이 지나면 또 다른 존재로 재탄생 하는 것이다.
이러한 법칙은 무생물에게도 적용된다. 수많은 원소가 모여 플라스틱, 금속, 고무 등의 부품이 되고, 부품들이 모여 특정 기능을 하는 사물이 된다. 그리고 고장 나거나 유행이 지나면 버려진다. 나는 이렇게 사물로써의 기능을 다 한 '존재' 들을 분해하고 재구성하여 로봇의 모습을 한 새로운 '존재'로 만든다. 버려진 존재들에 생명을 불어 넣는다. 이것이 내가 추구하는 작업방향임과 동시에 전달하고자 하는 메시지이며, 나름대로의 위트이기도 하다.
현대사회에서는 생물, 무생물뿐 아니라 감정, 시간, 가치 등 비물질적인 존재들도 수없이 버려지고 있지만 막상 그것들이 재탄생 되어 빈 자리를 채워주기란 어려운 것 같다. JUNK한 소재들로 만들어진 새로운 형태의 작품과 그 안에 담긴 신선한 이야기들이 무미건조한 일상에 즐거움을 선물할 수 있기를 바란다. ■ FORI



Which Birthday are you having today?
To begin with common example, just like when there's good-bye after an encounter and death after birth, a new beginning is no different than a starting point towards the end. Although the end consists of sadness, frustration, missing, and sense of loss, I give couple of questions instead of common consolation of saying the end is the new beginning; what if the ones that went away were not really gone? What if they are alive in different form, with different lives? And what if the time we have been together were to help them to greet better lives? There aren't many good opportunities to form life's turning point than to prod common dichotomous thoughts.

Here, robots that have just born and have birthdays gather together. Dressed up with bright colors, they seem to be happy and enjoying themselves. However, if we look closely with a thought they might be hiding some funny stories, we can find spots that show the robots are not brand new. Minor scratches that cannot be covered with bright colors, traces of assembling parts, logos of specific brands let us know that these are electronic devices with different formation, covered with pretty colors, and that they were not cute robots from the beginning. FORI says it is his job to help waste-machineries to have new lives. The former lives of his robots are digital cameras that help to capture the moment, MP3s that convey thoughts through songs, TVs that make fantasies to become realities, and cell phones that let cherished ones' voices heard. When they've done their works, their various parts are dissembled, fixed, relocated, and colored by FORI. Robots that are born again with such new appearances live other lives again. By this time we can say FORI's work itself is a work of art; but the reason we can't accept his works as just happy and joyful is because they convey the process of endless waiting and sacrifice.

When he was asked if it is possible that one being can live a hundred, a thousand lives over and over again, FORI answered with the brightest face – "yes, and I want to believe so". It was an answer hard not to smile at, since everybody wants to live a life with better self in better ways. Then, since it's the New Year, let us think this way; if we can consider everyday a new life, wouldn't it be a bit okay to look at our frustrating situations with different perspectives? We will continue to repeat everyday lives next week, next month, and even in next lives, so it might be nice to imagine ourselves in colorful days, just like FORI's robots. With this exhibition, I hope everyone will be able to bear fruit for past lives and prepare for next ones, and I wish everyone to live everyday as their birthdays. ■ Chang Seo yoon

All the living things in this world are aggregation of matters. Tiny cells are born with time-line through aggregation, and then die away. Human and animal go back to earth and plants become manure. Vapor becomes rain then freeze, and keeps dispersing within the air. For one thing to have specific characteristic is when it is only within the concept of time. A being made up with various matters will eventually reborn as different being as some time passes by.

This rule also applies to inorganic substances. Many elements gather to create plastic, metal and rubber, and these parts gather to become a thing with specific purpose. When they are broken or out-of-date, they get thrown out. I disassemble and relocate these 'beings' that can no longer function, and recreate them as robots, as new 'beings'. I give lives to those that have been thrown out. This is what I pursuit within my works and what I want to deliver as a message, and something I consider witty.
In this modern society there are countless beings, nonliving, feelings, time, and morals being thrown out every second, but it seems difficult for them to reborn into something and fill out the hole. I hope these newly shaped works made by junks and fresh stories within will present joy to mundane lives. ■ FORI
