갤러리 조선은 2018년 5월 2일부터 22일까지 정성윤 작가의 개인전 『THING』을 진행한다. 단순 반복적 기계장치를 통해 설치와 조각 작업을 하는 정성윤 작가의 8번째 개인전으로, 갤러리조선에서 이뤄지는 세번째 개인전이기도 하다. 정성윤 작가는 기하학적 형태, 단순한 색으로 이루어진 이전의 작업에서 탈피하여 촉각적인 성질이 두드러지는 신작을 선보일 예정이다.

정성윤 작가의 대표적인 작업은 원시적인 원리로 움직이는 기계장치와 기하학적 도형의 결합체이다. 스칠듯 하면서도 충돌하거나 부숴지지 않는 정성윤 작가의 작품은 한 편의 부조리극처럼 허망하고 무용한 반복을 계속한다. 둥글거나 각진 도형들이 가까워지고 멀어지거나, 얕은 폭의 움직임을 반복하는 작품은 욕망의 시작, 확장과 종말의 순환 구조를 상징한다. 차갑고 무거워 보이는 조각은 실상 인간의 가장 깊은 정체성 중 하나인 욕망에 대해서 질문하는 것이었고, 이를 통해 시지각과 기억 사이의 빈 공간 즉 사유의 틈을 만들어내고자 했다.

이번 개인전에서 선보이는 작업은 기존의 작업과 다른 재료(모피 등)를 사용하여, 시지각의 폭을 더욱 확장시켜보고자 한다. 기존의 작업에서 사용되었던 단순 반복적 기계장치는 여전히 등장하지만, 그 재료는 모피와 같이 촉각적인 것이다. 전시장 안에서 꿈틀거리며 각자의 약속된 움직임을 반복하는 모습은 각 작품간의 촉각적인 대조를 극명하게 드러낼 예정이다. 정성윤 작가는 새로운 재료를 통해 직선적이고 한정적이었던 전작과는 다른 유동적이고 계산할 수 없는 윤곽을 만들고, 이의 반복적 동선을 통해 이전부터 탐구해왔던 인간적 고뇌와 갈등에 대한 고찰을 심화시켜 보고자 한다. 윤곽이 없는 재료들은 추적 할 수 없는 욕망의 근원을 상징하며 전시장을 채운다. 정성윤 작가는 비유적이고 모호한 기계장치를 통해 무용하면서도 그 한계를 가늠할 수 없는 인간의 오래된 숙명을 재생산하고자 한다.
■ 갤러리 조선


우리는 각자 미지의 시나리오를 연기 하고 있다. 그 미지의 내부를 들여다본다는 것은 두려운 일이다. 이해하기 힘든 경로를 인식하는 것은 죽음의 공포를 수반하기 때문이다. 시간성이 사라진 시대에 감춰진 우리의 상실과 우울, 공포, 복수와 연민과 같은 진행형의 기억들을 기계라는 근대의 매체에 담는다. 시간성을 잃고 부유하는 형태와 물질들을 포집해가는 가상의 행위를 순환시켜 기계장치가 만들어내는 행위와 피사체간의 지속적인 인터페이스의 변조를 통해 역설적인 허상을 이야기한다. 이것은 현재와 과거 그리고 미래의 욕망을 표상하는 다이어그램이기도 하다.
이번 개인전 『THING』에는 특정한 형태가 고안되거나 고착된 특정 결과물(형태)이 없다. 이것은 행동 결정에 영향을 미치는 심리의 작용이나 원리의 불확실성에서 기인한다. 완성될 형태를 위해 대상을 깎거나 덧붙여 특정한 형태를 이루는 것이 아닌 미지의 형태로 진화하는 어떠한 상태를 지속시키기 위한 것이다. 예측 할 수 없는 경로와 그 내부를 향한 자각을 통해 힘이 형태로 진화하는 과정, 증가하는 엔트로피가 임계점의 사선에서 배회하는 긴장의 질서를 기능적 혹은 비기능적 기계 메카니즘을 통해 구현 하는 것이다. 이는 나에게 자연과 인간 세상을 보는 방법론이며 자아라는 실존적 형태의 허상을 재구성하고 통제하는 수단이다.

Gallery Chosun will host the solo exhibition " THING " by Sung-yoon Jung from May 2 to 22, 2018. This is Chung Sung-yoon Jung 's eighth solo exhibition, which installation and sculpture using simple repetitive mechanical devices will be shown. And this is also the third exhibition being held at Gallery Chosun. Sung-yoon Jung will release a new work featuring a highly tactile material, different from the previous work made of geometric forms and simple colors.
Sung-yoon Jung 's representative work is a combination of a machine that moves on a primitive principle and a geometric shape. Sung-yoon Jung 's work, which is seems to be so fragile that it almost looks like to be crushed or destroyed, continues to move in be a vain and useless repetition like a Absurdes Theater. Previous works made up of round or angular shapes repeat a narrow range of movements represent the rotation structure of the beginning, extension, and end of desire. The cold, heavier sculpture is actually the question of one of man's deepest identities - the desire. This sculpture invites us to create an empty space between our visual experience and memory.

Current works intend to expand the range of previous works by using different materials (fur, etc.). Simple repetitive machines used in previous works still appear, but the materials are tactile, like fur. Recent works that will reveal after the opening, are moving up in the air, repeating its tactile effect. With this new materials, the Artist created flexible and uncomputable outlines that are different from the previous ones, and expects to explore deeper regarding human agony and conflicts. Un-out-lined materials represent the source of untraceable desires fill the gallery. The Artist aims to recreate the old destiny that human repeats by figurative yet useless machine.

We each play an unknown scenario. It is frightening to look into the unknown. Recognizing the difficult path to comprehend involves the fear of death. We put our losses and progressive memories, such as depression, horror, revenge, and compassion in the modern machine in this age when time no longer means a thing. By rotating the virtual action that collects timeless, floating forms and matter, I tries to talk about paradoxical virtuality regarding machine works that creates performance and transition of interface. It is also a diagram of current, past and future desires.

There are no specific results (shapes) in recent work. This is due to the uncertainty in the principle or behavior that affects the decision. It is intended to sustain any state that evolves into an unknown form rather than cut or added to the object for the form to be completed. I intend to re-create functional or non-functional mechanism that reflects the Process in which the force evolves into a form through its interior perception, and the Order of tense that created from increasing entropy. It is my methodology to see nature and the human world, and it is a tool to reconstruct and control the real form of the illusion of self.
