군더더기 하나 없는 매끈한 표면, 감각적인 색감과 구도와의 산뜻한 조우. 이것이 조경재의 작품을 접했을 때, 누구나 처음 받게 되는 일반적인 인상일 것이다. 제한된 사각의 프레임 안에 고도로 정제되어, 그 무엇보다 세련되게 시각적으로 구현된 특정한 이미지들. 이처럼 작가가 치밀하게 계산하여 펼쳐낸 한 장의 매혹적인 이미지 앞에서 우리는 무의식적으로나마 ‘반응’하게 된다. 하지만 이내 구체적으로 무엇을 이야기하는지 도무지 알 수가 없는 이 이미지들은 시간이 지날수록 더욱 강렬한 잔상을 남기며 우리를 미궁 속으로 빠져들게 한다. 이 오묘하지만 매력적인, 그렇기에 우리의 눈길을 사로잡는 일련의 작업들을 통해 과연 작가 조경재가 우리에게 던지고자 하는 화두는 무엇일까?

조경재의 작업은 작가의 표현을 빌리자면 ‘카메라의 제한된 화각 안에 실제 공간을 추상 회화처럼 보이도록 연출하고 이를 사진으로 기록하는 작업’이다. 즉 오브제의 조합을 통해 만드는 하나의 평면인데, 이를 위해 실제로 작가가 하는 일의 대부분은 여러 가지의 기성 오브제들을 모아 놓고 이들 하나하나와 그것들이 놓일 공간을 끈질기게, 집요하리만치 유심히 관찰하는 일이다. 개개의 개체들과의 관계성을 면밀히 고찰한 뒤, 각 사물이 가진 기호, 혹은 상징성을 배제하고, 철저하게 의도적으로 오브제의 순수한 조형성을 재조합하여 관람객들에게 제시하는 것이다.

이처럼 무심한 듯 작가가 던져 놓은 생경한 이미지들은 우리의 시각을 ‘반응’하게 한다. 본래의 문맥에서 벗어나 의미를 잃고 부유하는 사물들이 만들어내는 이미지는 그 안에서 철저하게 미학적인 관계성만을 획득함으로써 ‘보이는 무엇인가를 새롭게 보이게’ 드러낸다. 이것이 바로 작가 조경재가 본인의 작업을 통해 지속적으로 행해오고 있는 것이다. 실체(오브제)와 가상(조합을 통한 평면), 매체 간의 경계(설치와 사진), 그리고 추상과 구상을 내용으로 하는 작업들을 통해 조경재는 우리에게 ‘본다는 것이 무엇인지’, 그리고 ‘이미지를 어떻게 받아들이고 읽어낼 것인가’로의 사유를 이끈다.

‘보는 것에 반응하는 법’, 궁극적으로는 ‘예술에 반응하는 법’을 배워야 우리 삶이 더욱 윤택해질 것이라고 말하는 작가 조경재는 대중을 시각에 반응하게 만드는 것이 ‘시각예술가’들이 해야 하는 일임을 밝히며, 그 방향성을 지속적으로 고민하며 실천해 오고 있다. 그에 따르면 이미지들은 스스로 자신의 의미와 역할을 만들어내며 발전하기에, 자신의 임무는 이들이 보다 잘 드러날 수 있도록 길을 만들어줄 뿐이며, 이를 통해 자신의 의도를 대중에게 알릴 생각은 없다고 명확히 밝히고 있다. 그렇기에 개개의 관객들은 그저 각자의 관점에서 있는 그대로 그의 작품을 바라보고 해석하며, 자유로이 자신만의 서사를 만들어가면 되는 것이다. ‘그림이 왜 항상 무언가를 재현하는 수단이 되어야 하는가’를 의심하며, ‘어떻게 하면 그림이 순수하게 그 자체로 작품이 될 수 있는지’를 고심해온 미국의 미니멀리스트 프랭크 스텔라(Frank Stella, 1936 - )가 했던 “What You See is WHAT YOU SEE” 라는 유명한 경구는 동시대 미술에서뿐만 아니라, 조경재의 작업에서도 여전히 유효하다.

“We are not responding to what we see.
If we react to the visual, our lives will be happier than before."

An exceptionally clean and smooth surface, a fresh encounter with sophisticated colors and composition. This is the first impression one usually gets when coming across Kyungjae Cho's work. Specific images that are highly refined and, above all, and exhibited in a square frame. In this way, we spontaneously 'react' in front of a single fascinating image that the artist carefully manipulated and unfolded. However, these images, which are not immediately clear what they imply in detail, leave us with more intense afterimages and immerse us in a mystery as time passes. What is the message that the artist Kyungjae Cho is trying to convey through this mysterious but attractive series of works?

According to the artist, Cho's work is 'the work of directing the real space within the limited angle of the camera to look like an abstract painting, and recording it as a photo'. In other words, it is a plane created through a combination of objects. And for this purpose, most of the artist's work is to collect various ready-made objects and persistently and carefully observe each of them and the space where they will be placed. After meticulously examining the relationship among the individual objects, any inherent or symbolic meanings of each object are set aside, and the pure formality of the object is thoroughly and deliberately recombined and presented to the audience.

The unfamiliar images thrown by the artist, as if indifferent, make our perspectives 'react'. Out of the image created by the pure forms of the objects which are floated away from their original context arises 'something that looks new' by acquiring only a thorough aesthetic relationship within them. This is what artist Kyoungjae Cho has been doing continuously through his work. Through works that contain substance (object) and virtual (a plane through combination), boundary between media (installation and photography), and abstraction and concept, Cho guides us to think about 'what it is to see' and 'how to accept and interpret images'.

Kyungjae Cho, who says that learning "how to respond to what we see" and ultimately "how to respond to art" will make our lives more prosperous, has been continuously contemplating and practicing along this path, firmly believing that it is the job of "visual artists" to make the public respond to the perspective. Based on his opinion, since images develop by creating their own meaning and role, his mission is only to make a way for them to be more visible, and he clearly states that he does not intend to inform the public of his purposes through these works. Therefore, each audience member just has to look at and interpret his work from their own point of view, thereby creating his or her own narrative.

The famous phrase "What You See is WHAT YOU SEE" by Frank Stella(1936 - ), an American minimalist who has struggled with "how a painting can become purely a work of its own," doubting "why a painting should always be a means of reproducing something," is still valid not only in contemporary art, but also in the work of Kyoungjae Cho.
