PKM 갤러리는 오는 3월 6일부터 4월 13일까지 ‘붓질’이라는 근원적 행위를 통해 회화의 본질을 탐구해온 신민주(b.1969)의 개인전 «아리아드네의 실»을 개최한다. 2021년 PKM 갤러리에서의 작품전 이후 3년 만에 개최되는 그의 이번 전시에서는 그리스·로마 신화의 신비로운 이야기와 접목된 생동감 있는 회화 신작 19점이 소개된다.

신민주는 일상 속 시시각각 마주하는 감각과 이미지들을 호흡하듯 체화하고, 이를 두터운 붓질로 그려내고 팽팽한 스퀴지(Squeegee)로 힘있게 밀어내는 반복적인 행위를 통해 긴장감과 에너지가 응축된 추상 화면을 표출해왔다. 붓 터치와 스퀴징으로 ‘그리기’와 ‘지우기’를 반복하며 그가 인생에서 겪어온 감정들을 차분히 마주함과 동시에, 자신의 생존을 위한 활기(vigor)를 캔버스 위에 부여하는 신민주의 당찬 생명력은, 다채로운 색채와 강한 물성으로 발산되며 생동과 우연을 아우르는 추상화로써 관람자를 조우한다.

이번 전시 «아리아드네의 실»은 그리스·로마 신화의 한 에피소드와 제목을 같이 한 것으로, 크레타 왕국이 바치는 인간 제물을 잡아먹던 괴물 미노타우로스를 죽이고자 스스로 미궁을 향했던 아테네의 왕자, 테세우스에게 크레타 왕국의 공주였던 아리아드네가 간절히 건넸던 실타래에서 착안되었다. 테세우스가 붉은 실을 따라 어두운 미궁을 찬찬히 헤쳐 나온 이야기는, 붓과 스퀴지, 물감과 캔버스를 실타래 삼아 생과 작업을 지속해 온 신민주의 삶을 그대로 반추한다. 그의 삶을 미궁으로 대체할 때, 작가는 그 안에서 변질하지 않고 오롯이 자신을 지켜내는 도구로 ‘그림’을 선택했고, 그림은 곧 신민주에게 아리아드네의 실과 등가물로서 작용한다.

대표작 <그날 새벽, 트로이>, <그날 밤, 트로이3>, <그날 밤, 트로이2> 는 트로이를 향한 아킬레우스의 복수심과, 오디세우스의 불타는 목마를 마치 관람자의 목전에 두는 듯 전시 공간을 가득 채운다. 불길과 연기가 치솟아 붉고 뿌옇게 번지듯 발하는 신민주의 거친 붓질과 스퀴징의 흔적은 이내 제목에서 연상되는 신비로운 이야기와 얽혀, 보는 이의 상상과 집중을 높인다. 황금 사과로 절체절명의 순간에 놓인 파리스와 트로이, 프쉬케와 에코가 끝내 놓지 못한 호기심과 사랑, 테세우스와 프로메테우스가 감내한 형벌의 고통 등 신민주는 사랑과 지혜가 담긴 오랜 신화를 드라마틱한 추상의 작업으로 노래하며, 과거가 전하는 위로를 현재에 수용하고, 미래를 향한 기대를 담아 실타래처럼 우리 앞에 펼쳐 보인다.

신민주는 홍익대학교 회화과에서 학사 및 석사를 졸업한 후, 일민미술관, 금호미술관, 환원미술관 등 국내 유수의 미술관에서 다수의 단체전 및 개인전을 가졌다. 본 개인전의 기간 중 개최되며, 그의 솔로 부스로 꾸며질 2024 화랑미술제 PKM 갤러리 부스에서는 그의 작업들이 이번 전시의 연장선상에서 선보여질 예정이다.


PKM Gallery is pleased to announce a solo exhibition titled Ariadne’s Thread by Shin Min Joo from March 6th to April 13th. The artist, who has been exploring the essence of painting through the fundamental act of brushstrokes, returns three years after her solo showcase at PKM Gallery in 2021, presenting 19 new works that weave the mysterious narratives of Greek and Roman mythologies with vibrancy.

As Shin embodies the senses and images encountered in everyday life as if breathing, she conveys abstraction with condensed tension and energy through repeated actions of painting, accompanied by thick brushstrokes and powerfully pushing down with a tight squeegee. Viewers experience the paintings emanating energy and chance, manifested through rich colors and sturdy materiality. These elements encapsulate the artist’s emotions she perceived in life through the process of ‘painting’ and ‘wiping off’ with brushes and squeegees, as well as her imposing vitality on canvas, endowed with a vigor for one’s own survival.

The exhibition, Ariadne’s Thread, derives its title from an episode of Greek and Roman mythology. It recounts the tale of Ariadne, the princess of the Kingdom of Crete, who desperately entrusts a thread to Theseus, the prince of Athens. Theseus ventures into the labyrinth to confront the Minotaur, a monstrous creature that devours the human sacrifices offered by the kingdom. The narrative of Theseus finding the way out from the dark depths following the red thread resonates with Shin’s own journey. She views artistic tools - brush, squeegee, paint, and canvas - as the threads that guide her through the labyrinth of life and artistic practice. Just as Ariadne’s thread served as a lifeline for Theseus, Shin considers ‘painting’ to be a steadfast tool of protection without losing her sense of self.

Dawn on that day, Troy, That night, Troy, That night, Troy 2, That night, Troy 3, fill the exhibition space as if Achilles’ revenge towards Troy and the burning horse of Odysseus are in front of the viewer. Resembling flames and smoke, aglow in shades of red and fog, the traces of Shin’s rough brushworks and squeezing intertwine with the mysterious story associated with the title, evoking the viewer’s imagination and concentration. Shin reinterprets old myths of love and wisdom – the story of Paris and Troy who faced the desperate moment with the golden apple, the curiosity and love that Psyche and Echo could not let go of, and the pain of punishment that Theseus and Prometheus endured – as abstract works. She embraces the comfort of the past in the present and unfolds them like a thread with anticipation for the future.

After graduating from the Department of Painting at Hongik University with both a bachelor’s and master’s degree, Shin held numerous exhibitions at some of Korea’s most prominent museums, including the Ilmin Museum of Art, the Kumho Museum of Art, and the Hanwon Museum of Art. In addition to her solo exhibition at PKM Gallery, her works will also be featured at Galleries Art Fair 2024, where her solo booth will serve as an extension of the pieces showcased in the current exhibition.
