Gallery Hyundai is pleased to present Seulgi Lee’s solo exhibition, SAMSAM, from June 27 to August 4, 2024. Lee explores the roots and cultures of the different parts of the world in her own unique way based on anthropological interests. The artist creates art pieces by recalling folkloric elements and, at the same time, utilizing formative language and various materials that reflect contemporaneity. Furthermore, Seulgi Lee unfolds her oeuvre that blurs the boundaries of meaning indicated by objects or subjects and offers new perspectives, bringing a change in perception and poetic resonance to the audience. SAMSAM is the first exhibition presented at Gallery Hyundai in six years and presents approximately twenty diverse works, putting great emphasis on her new series, BIANE Hanging Board Project, which figuratively expresses interests toward everyday objects, languages, and the fundamental forms of nature.

The title of the exhibition, SAMSAM, is inspired by an adjective, samsamhada (삼삼하다), in the Korean language. Samsamhada is a versatile term with various meanings depending on the context: the appearance is plausible; it is crystal clear as if you were seeing it right in front of your eyes, and so on. Likewise, SAMSAM breaks away from the classic sense of titles, objects, or referents and opens up meaning and sense in a multidimensional manner. Moreover, the exhibition is a metaphor for Lee’s creative world, which gives life to her works and offers the audience a change of perception and sense. SAMSAM revolves around Lee’s yet-undiscovered series, BIANE Hanging Board Project, in which onomatopoeic and mimetic words are designed with her characteristic humor and are engraved on a wooden plaque. The exhibition consists of the KUNDARI series, which uses expressions of the female body found in the European prehistoric era and Neolithic relics as a motif, mural paintings in collaboration with master artisans who create Ramie Dancheong (Korean traditional painting), and the BAGATELLE series, which are wooden sculptures and derivations of the French game Bagatelle. Accordingly, the white cube will turn into an unexpectedly magnificent space with Lee’s major works in standout geometrical formation and painted in her unique, simple, and vivid colors.


갤러리현대는 이슬기의 개인전 《삼삼》을 2024년 6월 27일부터 8월 4일까지 개최한다. 이슬기는 인류학적 관심을 바탕으로 세계 각지의 전통과 문화를 자신만의 색깔로 탐구해 왔다. 그는 민속적인 요소를 상기하는 동시에 현대성을 반영한 물질적 조형 언어와 다양한 소재를 활용하여 작품화한다. 나아가 오브제나 대상이 지시하는 의미의 경계를 무화하고 새로운 시선을 부여하여 관람자에게 인식의 전환과 시적인 울림을 선보이는 작품 세계를 펼쳐 왔다. 이번 전시는 갤러리현대에서는 6년 만에 열리는 개인전으로, 일상적인 사물과 언어, 자연의 근원적인 형태에 대한 관심을 조형적으로 표현한 신작 〈현판 프로젝트〉를 중점으로 20여 점의 다양한 작품을 선보인다.

전시 제목인 《삼삼》은 “외형이 그럴듯하다.” “눈 앞에 보이는 듯 또렷하다.” 등 맥락에 따라 다양한 의미로 변주되어 사용되는 형용사 ‘삼삼하다’에서 착안했다. 이처럼 《삼삼》은 작업의 제목이나 오브제 또는 지시 대상이 지닌 전형적인 의미에서 벗어나, 의미와 감각을 다차원적으로 개방하고 작품에 생명력을 부여하여 관람자에게 인식과 감각의 전환을 선사하는 이슬기 작가의 작업 세계를 은유한다. 이번 전시에서는 의성어와 의태어를 작가 특유의 재치로 도안화하여 나무 현판 위에 새긴 신작 〈현판 프로젝트〉를 중심으로, 유럽의 선사 시대 및 신석기 시대 유물에서 찾아볼 수 있는 여성 신체의 표현을 모티프로 삼은 〈쿤다리〉 연작, 단청 장인들과 협업한 벽화 작업, 프랑스에서 만들어진 바가텔 놀이에서 영감을 받은 목재 공간 설치 작품 〈바가텔〉 연작 등이 소개되며, 이슬기 작가 특유의 단순하고 명료한 색채와 기하학적인 형태의 조형성이 돋보이는 작업들로 화이트 큐브의 전시장을 형형색색으로 채울 예정이다.
