Scattering and Vanishing

I have long explored the nights of the city I live in and its surrounding areas. The nightscape of a modern city, aside from a few distinct landmarks, carries an anonymity that looks much the same no matter where in the world you place it. Within that familiarity, the sudden encounter with strangeness, or the stark contrast created by dazzling artificial lights, reveals the desires and loneliness of modern people, while also bringing back forgotten memories. The images of everyday life lose their original essence, becoming distorted or floating within the frame. These dreamlike, hazy images draw us into our own intimate stories, much like a dream.

First, I gaze upon a landscape with two doors.
Amidst the thick greenery of deep green vines, I see a house with two doors. Throughout our long lives, we are constantly faced with countless choices. As time passes and we look back, we realize that those choices have shaped who we are today. Yet, everyone has, at least once, wondered about the path not taken. We find ourselves tracing and imagining those roads we could not travel, as if trying to walk them in our minds.

The large and small snowballs that suddenly appear in the middle of city streets or tucked away in alleyways may cause us some discomfort for a while, but they will soon disappear. They symbolize incidents and accidents that are easily forgotten, or the private memories and anxieties of individuals. Among the countless footprints left in the heavy snow, one might recall many different stories.

The snowflakes fluttering lightly and silently through the night may seem similar at a glance, but in truth, they scatter and disappear in countless different forms. I found them resembling our own varied hearts and memories, our anxieties and fears. Likewise, the countless lights adorning the city's nightscape may appear the same on the surface, yet each one holds its own intimate story — a reflection of the sleepless labor and the loneliness of a society driven by consumption.

Within each of our hearts, there are surely many words — and the accompanying visual images — that could fill the blank in "scattering and disappearing ( )." As you wander among these works, I hope you will bring to mind your own diverse imaginings.


작가의 글_ 흩어지고 사라지는

나는 오랫동안 내가 살고 있는 도시와 근교의 밤을 탐구하여 왔다. 현대 도시의 밤은 특정 랜드 마크만 제외하면 세계 어느 곳에 대입해도 비슷한 모습의 익명성을 띤다. 그런 익숙함 속에서 갑자기 마주치는 생경함, 혹은 눈부시게 빛나는 인공적인 조명과 그 대비를 통해 현대인의 욕망과 고독을 마주하기도 하고 지나쳐버린 기억을 상기하기도 한다. 일상의 이미지들은 본래의 고유한 성질을 잃고 화면 속에서 일그러지거나 부유한다. 마치 꿈과도 같은 몽롱한 이미지들은 우리를 각자의 내밀한 이야기로 끌어들인다.

먼저 두 개의 문이 있는 풍경을 바라본다.
짙은 초록의 넝쿨이 가득한 속에 두 개의 문이 있는 집이 보인다. 우리는 기나긴 삶 속에서 언제나 수많은 선택을 하며 살아간다. 시간이 흐르고 돌이켜보면 그때 그 선택들이 지금의 나를 형성하고 있는 것이다. 하지만 가보지 않은 길에 대한 생각을 누구든 한번쯤 해보았을 것이고 우리는 그렇지 못했던 곳을 더듬어 상상해 가보려 한다.

도심의 도로 한복판이나 골목 한 켠에 느닷없이 등장하는 크고 작은 눈덩이들은 얼마간 우리에게 불편감을 줄지 모르지만 곧 사라지고 말 것이다. 이는 쉽게 잊혀지고 마는 사건 사고 혹은 개인의 내밀한 기억들과 불안을 상징한다. 무수한 발자욱으로 채워진 폭설의 흔적들 속에서 여러 이야기를 떠올릴 수도 있다.

우연히 사이토 마리코의 <단 하나의 눈송이>와 은희경의 <다른 모든 눈송이와 아주 비슷하게 생긴 단 하나의 눈송이>라는 책을 읽었다.
소리 없이 나풀나풀 가볍게 흩날리는 밤의 눈송이들은 얼핏 보아서는 비슷하지만 사실은 다양한 모습으로 흩어지고 사라진다. 그 모습들이 제각각 다른 우리의 마음이나 기억, 불안과 닮아 있다고 생각되었다. 빼곡히 도시의 밤을 수놓는 빌딩들의 불빛들 또한 겉으로 보아서는 똑같을지라도 하나하나에 내밀한 이야기와 잠들지 않는 노동과 소비 사회의 고독을 품고 있다.

우리의 마음 한 켠에는 ‘흩어지고 사라지는 ( )’에 대입할 수 있는 여러 가지 단어와 그에 따른 시각적 이미지가 있을 것이다. 작업들 사이를 거닐면서 각자의 다양한 상상을 품어보길 바래본다.
