문화예술공공수장고가 선보이는 미디어 아트 프로젝트 ‘곶자왈: 숨결의 시간’은 제주 자연의 근원적인 생명력과 신화적 서사를 현대적 감각으로 재해석한 전시이다. 이 프로젝트는 인간의 시간대를 아득히 넘어선 곶자왈의 태초적 숨결을 예술적 언어로 번역해, 관람객을 생태적 질서와 신비로운 상상력이 공존하는 곶자왈의 중심부로 안내한다.

본 전시가 주목하는 제주의 지질학적 보물, ‘곶자왈’은 제주 방언으로 ‘곶(숲)’과 ‘자왈(나무와 덩굴, 암석 등이 뒤엉킨 곳)’의 합성어다. 이는 과거 화산 활동 시 분출된 용암이 굳으면서 형성된 불규칙한 암괴 위에 다양한 식물들이 뿌리를 내리며 만들어진 제주 고유의 원시림을 뜻한다. ‘곶자왈: 숨결의 시간’은 바로 이러한 곶자왈의 생태적 가치에 주목하여, 그 거친 지형 사이로 흐르는 정령의 기운과 수만 년의 세월이 응축된 침묵의 시간을 미디어 아트로 시각화한다. 전시는 우리가 일상 속에서 무심코 지나쳤던 자연의 의미를 다시금 되새기게 하며, 곶자왈이라는 공간이 단순히 물리적인 숲을 넘어 제주의 역사와 신화가 깃든 성스러운 장소임을 예술적 경험을 통해 전달한다.

시간이 멈춘 듯한 척박한 현무암 대지, 차갑게 굳어버린 무기질의 공간에서 생명의 박동이 꿈틀대기 시작한다. 거칠고 딱딱한 바위틈을 비집고 솟아오르는 새싹 하나. 이는 수만 년의 침묵을 깨고 ‘곶자왈’이라는 거대한 생태계의 서막을 알리는 가장 고귀하고도 웅장한 첫 번째 목소리가 된다. 이 짧지만 강렬한 생명의 탄생은 관람객의 눈앞에 살아 숨 쉬는 제주 숲의 탄생을 생생하게 펼쳐 보인다.

Part 2. 생명의 숲

Part 3. 서천꽃밭

제주 신화 속에서 서천꽃밭은 이 세상과 저 세상의 경계에 위치한 신비로운 공간이다. 이곳은 단순히 꽃이 아름다운 정원을 넘어, 인간의 생사화복을 관장하는 꽃들이 자라나는 ‘생명의 근원지’와 같다. 이 장소는 척박한 바위틈에서도 끈질기게 생명을 이어온 제주 곶자왈의 정신과도 닮아 있다. 오랜 세월 거친 비바람을 견뎌낸 곶자왈의 강인한 생명력은, 이 신성한 정원에 이르러 영롱하게 빛나는 예술적인 꽃들로 다시 태어난다.

Gotjawal: Time of Breath

Breathing Forest: In Search of the Forgotten Wonder of Nature

The media art project “Gotjawal: Time of Breath,” presented by The Public Storage for Artworks, is an exhibition that reinterprets the fundamental life force and mythological narratives of Jeju’s nature through a contemporary lens. By translating the primordial breath of Gotjawal—which far exceeds the scale of human time—into an artistic language, this project guides visitors into the heart of Gotjawal, where ecological order and mystical imagination coexist.

The focal point of this exhibition is Jeju’s geological treasure, the ‘Gotjawal.’ The term is a compound of the Jeju dialect words got (forest) and jawal (a place where trees, vines, and rocks are intertwined). It refers to Jeju’s unique primeval forest, formed as various plants took root atop the irregular rock masses created by lava erupted and solidified during volcanic activities in the past. Gotjawal: Time of Breath focuses on the ecological value of this landscape, visualizing through media art the spiritual energy flowing through the rugged terrain and the condensed silence of tens of thousands of years. Beyond being a physical forest, the exhibition conveys through an artistic experience that Gotjawal is a sacred space steeped in Jeju’s history and mythology, encouraging us to reflect on the meaning of nature that we often overlook in our daily lives.

Part 1. Birth of the Forest

In a barren basalt landscape where time seems to have stood still—a mineral space frozen in cold—the pulse of life begins to stir. A single sprout pushes through the cracks of the harsh, solid rock. This becomes the most noble and grand first voice, breaking tens of thousands of years of silence to announce the prelude to the vast ecosystem known as ‘Gotjawal.’ This brief yet intense birth of life vividly unfolds the creation of Jeju’s living, breathing forest before the eyes of the audience.

Part 2. Forest of Life

The silence of the forest is not a mere void, but a world brimming with countless invisible forces of life. These mystical entities are shaped into the guardian spirits of the forest through trajectories of light and waves of sound. Animals wandering through the woods appear clad in light, awakening the sanctity of the forest. The fluttering of birds and traces of beasts—elements often hidden from plain sight—are manifested through abstract imagery and sound, allowing visitors to vividly experience the aura of life permeating the entire forest.

Part 3. Seocheon Flower Garden

In Jeju mythology, the ‘Seocheon Flower Garden’ is a mystical space located on the boundary between this world and the next. More than a garden of mere floral beauty, it is the 'source of life' where flowers that govern human life, death, fortune, and misfortune grow. This place mirrors the spirit of Jeju’s Gotjawal, which has tenaciously sustained life even amidst barren rocky crevices. The resilient vitality of Gotjawal, having endured harsh winds and rains for ages, is reborn in this sacred garden as brilliantly glowing, artistic blossoms.

The exhibition Gotjawal: Time of Breath goes beyond merely reproducing nature through technology; it concentrates on restoring the mythological stories embedded within it. The message articulated when the intimate narrative of Gotjawal meets digital technology is clear: Jeju’s nature is not an object to be conquered or consumed, but a vast mythological organism with which we must breathe and coexist. We hope this exhibition serves as a precious journey to reflect on nature—the root of our lives—as a sublime existence, going beyond its ecological value.
