태양의 소실점에서

제주현대미술관의 ‘1평 미술관’은 야외의 유휴 공간을 예술적 사유가 머무는 장소로 재탄생시킨 프로젝트이다. 2021년부터 현대미술의 문턱을 낮추고 작가들의 작품을 폭넓게 소개하기 위해 다각적인 전시를 기획해 온 이 공간이, 열두 번째 프로젝트의 주인공으로 박한나 작가를 맞이한다.

이번 전시 《태양의 소실점에서》는 “다양한 매체를 다루며 어떻게 자연의 개입을 허용하고, 그 물질성을 드러낼 것인가?”라는 근원적인 질문에서 출발한다.
숲의 깊은 숨결을 머금은 정원을 지나 우거진 나무들이 늘어선 통로를 걷다 보면, 시선의 끝에서 네모반듯한 소실점의 공간을 마주하게 됩니다. 약 15m의 좁은 통로가 만드는 이 구조적 형태는 그 자체로 영사기가 쏘는 빛의 궤적이자, 거대한 카메라 내부로 걸어 들어가는 듯한 기묘한 광학적 경험을 선사한다. 작가는 이곳에 자연을 대하는 인간의 복합적인 시선을 탐구하는 두 개의 ‘실패 가능한 장치’를 제시한다.

그대로 두기: 기다림과 재야생화
첫 번째 장치는 전시장으로 향하는 통로에 놓인 ‘흙 주머니들’이다. 이는 인위적인 통제를 배제하고, 모든 것을 자연의 섭리에 맡기는 ‘재야생화’를 상징한다. 6개월의 전시 기간 동안, 이 작은 화분들은 비와 바람, 태양의 조건에 따라 바람에 날려 온 씨앗이 싹을 틔울 수도, 혹은 그 어떤 생명 활동 없이 무심하게 시간을 통과할 수도 있다. 작가는 자연을 소유하거나 통제하려는 의지를 내려놓고, ‘그대로 두기’라는 겸허한 태도로 생태적 시간을 응시하며 그 예측 불가능한 ‘실패의 가능성’까지 전시의 본질로 수용한다.

관찰의 욕망과 역설: 카메라 옵스큐라
통로의 끝에서 마주하는 두 번째 장치는 1평 남짓한 크기의 ‘암실’이다. 이곳은 외부 세계를 끊임없이 포착하려는 인간의 욕망이 투사된 ‘카메라 옵스큐라’의 공간이다. 작은 구멍을 통해 스며든 빛은 바깥 풍경을 거꾸로 뒤집어 내부 벽면에 투영한다. 조도가 낮은 날, 이 장치는 흐릿한 잔상만을 남기겠지만, 관객은 그 불확실함 속에서 역설적으로 자연의 흐름을 보게 된다. 암실 내부의 영상은 나무 그림자 위로 자연의 순환을 노래하는 익숙한 동요 가사를 띄우며, 우리가 자연을 본다고 믿는 행위가 사실은 ‘우리가 보는 조건’을 확인하는 과정임을 일깨워준다.

박한나 작가는 자연을 미화하거나 설명하려 하지 않는다. 대신 세계를 기어이 들여다보려는 ‘관찰의 욕망’과 자연을 있는 그대로 보존하려는 ‘그대로 두기의 태도’가 한 공간 안에서 충돌하고 지연되는 상태 자체를 제안한다. 관객은 어둠 속에서 마주한 뒤집힌 풍경과 통로에 놓인 흙의 잔상을 통과하며 비로소 본질적인 질문 앞에 서게 된다. 그것은 ‘무엇을 보았는가’라는 결과 중심의 질문이 아니다. 오히려 그동안 자연과 세계를 ‘어떠한 경로와 태도로 바라보고 있었는가’라는 시선의 근원에 대한 물음이다. 1평 미술관이라는 작은 틈을 통해, 당신의 시선이 자연의 깊숙한 내면과 조우하며 스스로의 시각적 궤적을 되짚어보는 귀중한 시간이 되기를 바란다.

The “1 Pyeong Museum” at Jeju Museum of Contemporary Art is a project that transforms an underutilized outdoor space into a site for artistic contemplation. Since 2021, the space has hosted diverse exhibitions aimed at lowering the threshold of contemporary art and introducing a wide spectrum of artists. For its twelfth project, the museum welcomes artist Park Hanna.

The exhibition, At the Vanishing Point of the Sun, begins with a fundamental question: “Working across various media, how might one allow for the intervention of nature and reveal its inherent materiality?”
Passing through a garden steeped in the deep breath of the forest and walking along a passage lined with lush trees, one eventually encounters a square space at the end of one’s gaze—the vanishing point. The structural form, created by a narrow 15-meter corridor, serves as a trajectory of light cast by a projector, offering the uncanny optical experience of stepping into the interior of a gigantic camera. Within this setting, the artist presents two ‘devices open to failure’ that probe the complex human gaze toward nature.


Letting It Be: Waiting and Rewilding
The first device consists of ‘soil pouches’ placed along the passage leading to the exhibition space. They symbolize ‘rewilding’—a relinquishment of artificial control and a surrender to the providence of nature. Over the six-month exhibition period, these small planters may sprout seeds carried by wind, rain, and sunlight, or they may pass through time without any visible sign of life. The artist sets aside the will to possess or regulate nature and instead adopts a humble stance of ‘letting it be,’ contemplating ecological time and embracing even the unpredictable ‘possibility of failure’ as integral to the exhibition itself.


The Desire to Observe and Its Paradox: Camera Obscura
At the end of the corridor stands the second device: a small ‘darkroom’ measuring roughly one pyeong. This space functions as a ‘camera obscura,’ projecting the human desire to capture the external world without cease. Light filtering through a tiny aperture inverts the outside landscape and casts it onto the interior wall. On days of low luminosity, the device will leave only faint afterimages; yet within that uncertainty, viewers paradoxically encounter the flow of nature. Inside the darkened room, an image overlays the shadows of trees with the lyrics of a familiar nursery rhyme that celebrates the cycles of nature. This serves as a reminder that what we believe to be an act of seeing nature is, in truth, a process of confronting the very ‘conditions under which we see.’

Park Hanna does not attempt to romanticize or explain nature. Instead, she proposes a state in which the ‘desire for observation’—the urge to peer into the world—and the ‘attitude of letting it be’—the intent to preserve nature as it is—collide and are deferred within the same space. Passing through the inverted landscape encountered in darkness and the lingering trace of soil in the corridor, viewers finally stand before an essential question. It is not a result-oriented inquiry of “What did I see?” but rather a fundamental one into the very source of our gaze: “Through what paths and attitudes have we been looking at nature and the world all along?” Through the small aperture of the 1 Pyeong Museum, we hope your gaze will encounter the deep interior of nature and retrace its own visual trajectory anew.
