- 1947년 독일 출생의 철학자, 미술사 학자, 기획자, 뉴욕대학교 러시아·슬라브학 교수이다.
- 칼스루에 디자인 아카데미(Hochschule für Gestaltung) 교수로 9회 상해 비엔날레 공동큐레이터, FORMER WEST(2008-2014) 리서치 자문위원으로 활동중이며, 큐레이터로서 54회 베니스 비엔날레 러시아관 외 뉴욕 퍼포마11(Performa 11), 칼스루에 ZKM, 프랑크푸르트 쉬른 쿤스트할레(Schirn Kunsthallen) 등에서 다수의 전시 기획에 참여 하였다. 주요 저서로는 <Under Suspicion: A Phenomenology of Media> (2012), <Introduction to Antiphilosophy> (2012), <The Communist Postscripts> (2010), <Going Public (2010), Art Power> (2008), <Ilya Kabakov: The Man Who Flew into Space from his Apartment> (2006), <Dream Factory Communism: The Visual Culture of the Stalin Period> (2003), <The Total Art of Stalinism: Avant-Garde, Aesthetic Dictatorship, and Beyond> (1992) 등이 있다.
