유어산수(遊於山水): 자연 속에서의 쉼, 그 속에 자유롭게 노닐다
"생명체가 존재하는 공간을 구름과 하늘로 그리고 그와 더불어 동양의 성리학적 철학에 바탕을 두고 있는 식물들을 자연의 은유적 상징으로 등장시켜 자연과 벗하여 소요유(逍遙遊) 하고자 하는 마음을 담아 보았다" (작가 노트 중에서)

박소영은 야외를 거닐면서 받았던 영감을 바탕으로 자연과 우주에 대한 명상과 사색을 작품에 지속적으로 담아내 왔다. 거기에는 앞의 인용문에서 보듯 자연과 벗하여 그 안에서 자유로워지는 '소요유'를 바라는 작가의 바람이 투영되었다. 이러한 작업의 방향은 이번 전시에서도 문맥을 같이한다. 더불어 이전과 다른 새로운 시도를 신작들에 더하였다. '소요유'에서부터 이번 전시의 제목인 '유어산수'까지 작가의 작업에서 '유(遊)'는 핵심이 되는 개념으로 작용한다. 유의 어원을 보면 깃발(旗)이 자유롭게 나부끼는 모습과 그 움직임이 마치 물이 흘러가는 것 같으므로 '흐른다'는 뜻에서 점차 의미가 파생, 확장되었다는 견해가 있다. 그리하여 유는 '흐른다'에서 '거닐다', '나가 놀다', '유람하다' 등과 같은 사람의 행위와 관련된 의미로 자주 사용하게 되었다. 여기에 동양 사상의 형이상학적 의미가 연계되어 군자가 배움을 위해 '한가롭게 노닐다' 또는 장자의 '소요유'처럼 무엇에도 구속되지 않고 '자유롭다', 구속으로부터 '초월하다'는 뜻으로도 해석할 수 있다. 산수화에서 유는 자연 즉, 산수에서 노닐면서 도를 체득하게 하는 것으로 여겨졌다. 산수를 즐기는 것은 곧 도를 즐기는 것과 같은 것으로 여겼기 때문이다. 거닐고 노님은 새로운 경험을 유발하고 인식을 확장시킨다는 점에서 화가들의 수양을 위해 꼭 필요한 과정이라 할 수 있다. 그 다음에 화가는 붓을 들고 창작 활동을 함으로써 이번에는 화폭 위를 자유롭게 노니는 것이다. 이처럼 유를 통해 수양하고 창작하는 것이 화가의 입장에서의 유라면, 산수화를 벽에 걸어 놓고 누워서 유람하는 즐거움을 맛보는 와유(臥遊)는 감상자의 입장에서의 유이다. 감상자는 그림을 통해 상상하면서 아무 제약 없이 그곳을 노닐 수 있으며, 때로는 자신이 거닐었던 자연 속에서의 경험을 떠올리며 작품을 음미할 수도 있다. 박소영은 전통 회화를 작업의 근간으로 삼아오면서 본인이 체화한 창작과 감상, 두 측면에서의 유의 개념을 작품으로 발현하고자 한다.

이번에 전시한 신작들에서 공통적으로 보이는 것은 하늘과 그 공간을 부유하는 구름 형상이다. 이것은 그 위에 그려지는 산수와 매화의 배경이 된다. 구름 형상은 작가가 가족과 함께 일 년 반 정도 미국에서 지내던 시기의 작업에서 처음 등장했다. 그전까지는 주로 작은 원들이 집적되어 마치 포도송이처럼 보이는 크고 작은 덩어리들을 표현했다. 전과 다른 변화가 일어난 것은 미국에서 보낸 시간이 작가가 육체적으로나 심적으로 여유롭게 '유'할 수 있었기 때문일 것이다. 그 동안의 바쁜 일상을 내려놓고 마음의 안정을 되찾고 노니는 가운데 자연스럽게 작품의 새로운 영감을 받기도 하고, 타국에서 전통에 대해 다시금 통찰하게 되었으리라 짐작된다. 여유로운 사색 속에 얻은 자양분은 귀국 후에도 이어져 모든 생명체가 공생하는 자연의 공간으로 상정한 하늘과 유동적인 대기의 흐름을 보여주는 구름 형상을 그려내고 있다. 작가는 이번 신작들에서 그간의 작업과 다른 시도 또한 보여준다. 정선의 금강산과 이징의 이금산수도(泥金山水圖)를 재해석한 작품들이 그것이다. 전에는 주로 배경이 되는 형상 위에 사군자의 대나무, 매화 등을 자연을 은유하는 하나의 상징으로서 그려왔는데, 이번에는 그 자리에 산수를 그렸다. 전통 산수화의 전형을 가져오되 그것을 그대로 옮겨 그린 것이 아니라, 나름의 심미관으로 선택한 부분을 하늘과 구름 형상 배경에 위치시켜 작가만의 가상 공간을 창조한다. 그곳에는 작가가 받아들인 전통과 지금, 여기의 현재가 공존한다. 이제 우리는 이 공간을 자유롭게 즐기고 자신의 보폭에 맞춰 거닐면 된다. 장기화된 코로나 바이러스 감염증-19(covid-19)의 세계적 대유행으로 인한 비대면과 거리두기 시스템은 우리의 삶을 위축시키고 지치게 만들었다. 어느 때보다 자연으로부터의 치유와 정화(淨化)가 절실한 요즈음이다. 작가는 자연과 인간의 공생을 바라는 마음을 작품에 담아 지친 우리의 마음에 위로를 건네준다. ■ 박세연


Walking in Nature: Relaxing and Strolling within Nature
"I used the clouds and sky to portray the space where life exists. I also displayed the plants, which are based on the Eastern Confucian philosophy, as metaphorical symbols of nature to express my wish to walk in and alongside nature." (Excerpt from the Author's Notes) Park Soyoung has continued to paint her meditations on nature and space by drawing inspiration from her outdoor strolls. As seen in the excerpt from the author's notes, Park's works reflect her wishes to befriend nature and to find freedom within nature by "strolling in it." Such tendencies are also displayed in the works exhibited in this exhibition. This exhibition also showcases new and adventurous works that differ from her previous works. From "Strolling in Nature" to "Walking in Nature," which is the title of this exhibition, the Chinese character for walking, "遊," serves as the key concept in the artist's works. It is believed that the meaning of the Chinese character was derived from the character for the flag, "旗," since the flag freely flows like water flowing from a stream. Thus, the character "遊," which initially meant "to flow," has been frequently used to express human behavior, such as "to walk," "go outside and play," and "go sightseeing." Added to this definition was the metaphysical meaning from Eastern philosophy, so that the character signified a virtuous man "leisurely strolling" to find enlightenment or to be "free" from everything, as described in Zhuangzi's "Xiaoyaouyou" (easy and free wandering), or to "transcend" oneself from all confinements. The concept of "遊" in landscape painting has been considered as a way to reach the truth, "tao," by playfully strolling in nature, such as the mountains and nearby waters. To enjoy the landscape was to enjoy "tao." Walking and wandering are essential activities for artists since they create new experiences and expand their awareness. Through such experiences, artists can raise their brushes and create art by freely roaming the canvas. If "遊" for artists is a way to improve themselves and create art, "遊" for viewers is to hang landscape paintings on their walls and savor the moment by lying down and appreciating them. By looking at a painting, viewers can freely roam around the landscape in their imagination. At times, viewers can appreciate art by remembering their own experience of walking in nature. Rooted in traditional paintings, Park Soyoung aims to manifest the concept of "遊," as an artist and a viewer in her works.
The common feature in Park Soyoung's newest works shown in this exhibition is the image of the sky and the passing clouds. This becomes the backdrop for the landscape and plum blossoms that are painted over it. Clouds first appeared in the artist's works during Park's sojourn in the United States, where she lived with her family for one and a half years. Before her move to the US, Park Soyoung's works mainly featured big and small blobs consisting of small circles that resembled a cluster of grapes. Perhaps her works changed because the artist was able to physically and mentally relax in a state of "遊" during her time in the United States. As she freed herself from her busy routine and found inner peace, and freely roamed about, Park Soyoung was naturally able to find new inspirations for her work and reconsider tradition in a foreign land. The inspirations that reached her during the leisurely contemplations continued to influence Park Soyoung's work even after returning to Korea. Her recent works portray the sky as a natural space where all living things coexist and the clouds that display the movement of air.
The artist's recent works display her fresh and adventurous choices. The change is evident in the works that reinterpreted Geumgang Mountain by Jeong Seon and the Landscape Splashed with Gold by Yi Ching. Park Soyoung's previous works mainly showed four gracious plants, especially the bamboo and plum blossoms, painted as metaphors for nature over a shape that served as the background. This time, she replaced the plants with an actual landscape. Although she borrowed some elements from the most representative traditional landscape paintings, she did not stop at simply copying them. Instead, she aesthetically chose several parts from the paintings and juxtaposed them above the sky and clouds, thereby creating a virtual space of her own. In this space, the tradition that the artist internalized and the present coexist. It is now our pleasure to freely roam about and walk within this space at our own pace.
The non-face-to-face and distancing system induced by the prolonged global pandemic of COVID-19 has been constricting and tiring. Healing and purification from nature have never been more important. By reflecting her dream of coexistence between human beings and nature in her works, Park Soyoung has succeeded in comforting our weary hearts. ■ Se-yeon Park
