아뜰리에 아키는 오는 8월 24일부터 9월 23일까지 정성준 작가의 개인전 《나의 지구에게; What a Wonderful World!》 을 개최한다. 정성준은 작업 초기부터 ‘인간과 자연의 공존’이라는 주제 아래, 심각한 대기오염, 기후위기, 과도한 소비문화, 환경문제에 대한 정치적 방안 등 현대사회가 직면한 다양한 사회·정치적 논제를 진지하되 해학적인 시각으로 기록해 왔다. 특히 이번 전시는 지구가 겪고 있는 심각한 환경 위기에 집중하여, 정성준의 확장된 서사와 새로운기법 그리고 시도를 보여주는 신작 회화 15여 점으로 구성된다.

전시 《나의 지구에게; What a Wonderful World!》는 인류에게 자연과의 공생에 대한 메시지를 전하고자 하는 작가의 세계관에 주목하였다. 정성준은 멸종위기에 처한 동물을 작품의 주요 모티브로 등장시킴과 동시에 눈앞에 닥친 환경문제를 외면하는 현대인의 냉담함을 함께 보여줌으로써 환경에 대한 현인류의 무관심을 작가만의 유쾌한 방식으로 꼬집는다. 이로써 작가는 인간 중심적 태도에 대한 문제를 제기하며, 인류를 포함한 자연이 직면하고 있는 위기에서 "앞으로 우리는 어떻게 해야만 하는가?"에 대한 질문을 던진다. 작가의 이러한 메시지는 오랜 시간 축적된 동시대적 고민과 탁월한 사실주의 회화기법이 어우러져 작가 특유의 독자적인 작업으로 완성된다. 무엇보다 이번 전시를 통해 선보이는 신작에서 주목할 점은 단순히 여정을 떠나는 것을 넘어 동물들의 적극적인 행동을 취하는 구성을 새롭게 선보인다는 점이다. 예를 들어 , <나무 심기 좋은 날(2023)> 작품을 통해 작가는 동물들이 직접 환경운동 시위에 나서거나, 기후변화와 인간의 과도한 개발 등으로 사막화가 진행된 지역을 가꾸는 등의 이야기를 담아냄으로써 더 직관적인 방법으로 환경과 공존의 이야기를 구체화하고 있다. 그리고 인간이 지닌 자연을 대하는 태도와 방식 자체를 적극적인 자세로 전환시키고자 하는 작가의 의도를 내포하고 있다.

2014년부터 정성준 작업세계의 중심이 되는 대표 연작인 <동물들의 도시여행>은 그가 중국 유학 시절 체감한 대기오염과 우연히 시청한 환경 다큐멘터리를 통해 작가가 마주한 환경 위기에 대한 사회적 담론을 다룬다. 작가는 “나는 현실을 있는 그대로 보여주는 리얼리즘이나, 보통의 사람들이 이해하기 힘든 추상적 표현 방법보다는 은유적인 방법으로 메시지를 전달하는, 해학적인 작품을 제작하고 싶었다.”라고 언급하며, ‘지구온난화’로 가장 심각한 멸종 위기종이 된 북극곰과 황제펭귄, 그리고 사막여우, 토끼 등의 동물이 유토피아를 찾아 떠나는 여정을 캔버스에 담아낸다. 이처럼 다소 무거운 주제를 다루면서도 친밀함과 유머러스함을 잃지 않는 것은 작가가 가진 유쾌하지만, 결코 가볍지 않은 예술가적 기질에서 비롯한 것이다. 특히 작가는 현존하는 도시의 이미지를 무채색(achromatic color)으로 담아내 환경오염을 외면하는 인간의 차가운 시선을 표현하며, 동물과 트램 등 그의 작업에서 주요하게 활용되는 요소는 원색 즉‘본연의 색’으로 표현, 회복되는 자연의 서사를 담아낸다. 이러한 극명한 색감 대비 방식은 인류와 자연 간의 거리감을 복기(復棋) 함과 동시에 관람객에게 인간으로서의 시선뿐만 아니라 자연 혹은 동물의 시선으로 오늘날 우리의 환경을 바라보게 한다.

또한 이번 전시에서 정성준은 강렬한 원색만으로 채워진 작가의 새로운 연작 <사막을 가꾸고 있는 동물들>을 선보인다. 이번 연작에 담긴 사막을 채운 선명하고 명료한 주홍색은 작품의 바탕이 되어 나무를 심는 동물들의 모습과 어우러져 역동적인 에너지를 내뿜는다. 작가는 “100년 후 숲은 다시 회복되고 울창해질 거야” 와 같은 희망적 텍스트를 화면에 직접적으로 드러내며 동화적 풍경을 넘어 자연이 회복할 수 있다는 희망적인 순간을 상상하게끔 이끈다. 이러한 지점은 작품 속 동물의 이미지를 익숙한 대상에서 환경보호의 메시지를 전하는 상징적 부호로 거듭나게 한다.

정성준(b. 1981, South Korean)은 러시아 국립 상트페테르부르크 미술대학(SPBU: St Petersburg University)에서 연수했으며, 중국 미술교육의 최고학부인 중국 중앙미술대학(CAFA: Central Academy of Fine Arts)에서 창립 100년 이래 최초의 외국인 수석 졸업자로 석사학위를 마치며 큰 화두가 되었다. 특히 세계적인 아트 컬렉터인 베르나르 아르노(Bernard Arnault, LVMH 그룹 회장)이 설립한 루이 비통 재단 미술관 (Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris)에 소장되며 국내 미술 현장을 넘어 국제적으로 각광받고 있다. 그 외에도 작가의 작품은 2020년 Forbes Global 2000에서 96위에 오른 중국의 대형 부동산 기업 Vanke(China Vanke Co.,Ltd, Shenzhen)을 비롯하여 중앙미술학원 미술관 (The Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing)에 소장되어 있다. 또한 지난3월 홍콩에서 개최된 ART CENTRAL을 통해 국제적 학술재단인 ANNA PAO SOHMEN FOUNDATION에 소장되며 작품성을 재차 인정받았다.


From August 24th to September 23rd, ATELIER AKI present 《나의 지구에게; What a Wonderful World!》, a solo exhibition by the artist Jung Seongjoon. Since the beginning of his career, Jung has been documenting various social and political issues that contemporary society facing, such as severe air pollution, climate crisis, excessive consumerism, and political solutions to environmental problems, under the theme of "coexistence between humans and nature," in a serious yet humorous way. This exhibition will feature 15 new paintings that showcase Jung's expanded narrative and new techniques and attempts, focusing on the severe environmental crisis that our planet is facing.

《나의 지구에게; What a Wonderful World!》 focuses on the artist's worldview, which seeks to convey a message to humanity about living in symbiosis with nature. Jung uses endangered animals as the main motifs of his works, while simultaneously showing the apathy of modern people who turn a blind eye to the environmental problems in front of them, and he skewers modern humanity's indifference to the environment in his own humorous way. By doing so, the artist raises the issue of anthropocentric attitudes and asks the question, "What should we do in the future?" in the face of the crisis that nature and humanity facing. The artist's message is combined with his long-standing contemporary concerns and his exceptional realistic painting technique and becomes his own unique way of works. What is most notable about the new works on view in this exhibition is that the artist has introduced new compositions in which the animals are not merely on a journey, but take active action. For example, in and , the artist depicts animals participating in the environmental protests or cultivating desertified areas due to the climate change and the overdevelopment by human in a more intuitive way, thus materializing the story of the coexistence and the environment. The artist's intention is to change the attitude and the ways humans treat nature into an active one.

A representative series of works that has been at the center of Jung's oeuvre since 2014 are with the social discourse on environmental crisis that the artist encountered through the air pollution he experienced while studying abroad in China and the environmental documentaries he accidentally watched. "I wanted to create a humorous work that conveys a message in a metaphorical way rather than realism that shows reality as it is, or abstract expression that is difficult for the people to understand," he says, adding that his canvases depict the journey of polar bears, which became the most endangered speice by the ‘climate chaange’, emperor penguins, desert foxes, rabbits, and other animals as they search for utopia. The intimacy and humor in these rather heavy subjects comes from the artist's playful, but not lighthearted, artistic temperament. In particular, the artist captures images of existing cities in achromatic colors to express the cold gaze of humans who turn a blind eye to the environmental pollution, while the main elements of his work, such as animals and trams, are expressed in primary colors, or "natural colors," to capture the narrative of restoring nature. This stark contrast of colors not only restores the distance between humanity and nature, but also invites the viewer to look at today's environment not only from a human’s perspective, but also from a natural or animals’ perspective.

In this exhibition, Jung will also present a new series of his paintings, , which are only filled with the intense primary colors. The vivid and vibrant vermilion color of the desert in this series exudes dynamic energy as it is combined with the images of animals planting the trees. The artist places hopeful texts such as "In 100 years, the forest will be restored and dense again" directly on the screen, inviting the viewer to imagine a moment of hope that nature can recover not just as the fairytale landscape. This point transforms the images of animals in the work from familiar objects into the symbolic signs that convey the messages of environmental preservation.

The artist trained at St Petersburg University (SPBU) in Russia and made waves when he completed his master's degree at Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), China’s premier art education institution, as the first foreign senior graduate in its 100-year history. In particular, his work has been gaining the international attention beyond the domestic art scene as it is being collected by the Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris, which is founded by Bernard Arnault(the chairman of the LVMH), a world-renowned art collector. His works are also in the collections of Vanke (China Vanke Co.,Ltd, Shenzhen), a large Chinese real estate company ranked 96th on the Forbes Global 2000 in 2020, as well as The Central Academy of Fine Arts(Beijing). In addition, his work was once again recognized by the ANNA PAO SOHMEN FOUNDATION, an international academic foundation, through the ART CENTRAL held in Hong Kong in March 2023.
