가나아트는 일본 디자이너 우치다 시게루(Uchida Shigeru)와 홍콩 디자이너이자 컬렉터인 애드리언 쳉(Adrian Cheng)이 협업하여 디자인한 가구 전시 Wander From Within을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 작년에 타계한 시게루가 처음으로 협업을 한 작품이자 타계 전의 마지막 작품으로, 쳉과의 협업을 통한 유일무이한 작품성을 보여주는 설치 가구 작품을 선보인다. 시게루의 전형적인 디자인 컨셉을 보여주는 다실 작품 중 ‘교안’이 전시에 포함되며, 이 작품은 쳉과 시게루가 마지막으로 디자인 미팅을 한 곳이기도 하여 의미가 깊다. 시게루와 쳉의 협업 작품인 ‘코라(Khora)’ 시리즈는 ‘AU1~5’라는 제목의 세트 작품으로 일본 자연 풍광의 아름다움에서 영감을 얻어 디자인되었고, 의자와 테이블, 그리고 조명작품으로 구성되어 있다. 의자 작품은 전통적 나무기법으로 짜인 격자무늬 병풍과 연결되어 있는데, 이 병풍의 그림자가 자아내는 모습은 나무, 물 등의 아름다운 자연의 형태를 그려낸다. 일왕 부부 전용 자동차･기차와 왕궁용 물품, 에르메스 가구 제작으로 유명한 일본 장인인 추조 토자와(Chuzo Tozawa)가 대나무와 밤나무로 제작하였고, 테이블은 와시(일본전통종이)에 옻칠을 하여 제작되었다. 자연의 아름다움과 전통 다도(茶道) 문화의 정신으로 심리적·물리적 경계를 허물고자 하는 두 디자이너의 일맥상통한 관점을 보여주는 이번 Wander From Within 전시는 아시아 감수성의 본질을 보여주는 예술 가구 전시이며, 전세계 순회 전시의 일환으로 밀라노에 이어 서울 가나아트센터에서 선보이게 된다.

Gana Art Center is proud to present Wander from Within, a touring design exhibition featuring an artisanal furniture collection co-designed by Cultural Entrepreneur Adrian Cheng, and award-winning Japanese master designer Shigeru Uchida. The exhibition is set to run on September 20th – October 22nd, 2017 at Gana Art Center Hall 3, Seoul, coinciding with the annual Korea International Art Fair (KIAF), Seoul. This marks the Asia debut of the collection, which was first unveiled in Milan this year. During the opening night on September 23rd, guests will journey through the genesis of the collection, handcrafted by renowned craftsman, Chuzo Tozawa. Wander from Within is the maiden design show of Adrian Cheng, founder of K11 Art Foundation, and it marks the first collaborative project by the late Japanese designer Shigeru Uchida (1943–2016) who, through design, explored the sensibilities of the ephemeral and the ritualistic tea ceremony in Japanese culture. Uchida-san’s works are held in permanent collections at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and M+ Museum in Hong Kong, among others. Combined with Cheng’s unique use of fine detailing, the collection prompts users to re-think the definition of space and the man-nature connection in a confined setting.

다실
전통적인 다도(茶道)는 정원의 통로 또는 ‘로지(露地)’에서 손님이 일상의 번뇌를 내려놓으면서 시작됩니다. 본의식이 이루어지는 장소도 방이나 집보다는, 단순히 경계가 있는 영역이었습니다. 15 세기에 다다미 방에서 발전된 다실은 전통적으로 약 2 x 2 미터 크기로 사각형 형태입니다. 우치다 시게루는 구조는 다르지만 안쪽을 대나무로 짓고 일본 화지를 사용한 다실 세 개를 디자인했습니다. 이 다실은 해체되고 다른 곳에서 다시 세울 수 있습니다. 쳉과 우치다는 이 다실에서 마지막 디자인 회의를 개최하기도 했습니다.

Tea Room
The ritual of relationships surrounding the traditional tea ceremony begins on the “roji” or path in the garden, where the guest lays aside his daily cares. Originally, the location of the actual ceremony was not always a room or a house, but simply a demarcated realm. The historical form of the tea room developed in the 15th century from the tatami room is usually squared with dimensions of roughly 7 x 7 feet. Shigeru Uchida designed three tea houses of different structural forms, built in bamboo with a Japanese paper lining in part. They can be dismantled and re-erected in different locations. The Tea Room was also where Cheng and Uchida San held their final design meeting.

AU2는 대자연의 품에 안겨 있는 느낌을 주는 부드러운 곡선의 의자로 가벼운 느낌의 밤나무로 만들었습니다. 일상 속의 아늑한 안식처와도 같으며, 두 팔은 대자연의 산맥처럼 뻗어 있어 앉아 있는 사람을 번민으로부터 보호하고 명상의 터전이 됩니다.

Within AU2, the sitter is embraced by the lightness of Japanese chestnut wood and an enveloping form, designed to resemble a cove or valley within the larger everyday space. It becomes a haven for meditation, over which are expansive mountain ranges that spread out like the arms of Mother Nature, protecting the sitter from troubling thoughts


AU_3
AU3는 변화무쌍한 하늘과 구름의 모습에서 영감을 받은, 주변상황에 맞게 변형해 사용할 수 있는 벤치와 파티션입니다. 파티션을 펼치면 부드러운 빛이 투과되고, 파티션을 거두면 광활한 풍경을 여과 없이 볼 수 있습니다. 명상을 위한 공간뿐만 아니라 동반자를 위한 초대 벤치가 됩니다.

AU_3
The transformability — a distinctive feature of AU3 — carries the association of our ever-changing sky, across which the clouds float. It also implies a relationship with the surroundings. When the screen is folded, the light is softened by a veil of mist. When the screen is set aside, the morning mist dissipates, as if looking out from a fen. It becomes a bench for meditation, as well as an inviting bench for companionship.


디자인
우치다 시게루 (Uchida Shigeru b. 1943 – 2016)
일본이 낳은 세계적인 디자이너로 건축, 인테리어, 가구, 산업디자인은 물론 도시계획에 이르기까지 수많은 괄목할만한 성과를 남겼습니다. Yohji Yamamoto를 위한 부티크, 고베 패션 박물관, 다실茶室(‘지안, 소안, 교안’) 등을 설계했으며, 작품들이 뉴욕 메트로폴리탄 미술관과 런던 콘랜 파운데이션 등에 소장되어 있습니다. 생전 마이니치 디자인상을 비롯하여 다수의 상훈을 수여 받았습니다.

애드리언 쳉 (Adrian Cheng b.1979-)
하버드대(Cum Laude) 졸업 후 일본 문화에 심취하여 스탠포드 교토 센터에서 일본학을 공부한 문화 트렌드를 선도하는 디자이너입니다. 박물관과 상점, 예술과 소비의 합체를 표방하는 K11과 젊은 작가･큐레이터를 지원하는 K11 Foundation을 설립하였습니다. 2012년에는 포춘(Fortune)의 '40 Under 40 (40세 이하 영향있는 기업인 40명)’에 선정되기도 했으며, 뉴욕 MOMA PS1 이사, 영국 로얄 아카데미 오브 아츠 (RA) 이사 등을 역임하고 있습니다.

토자와 추조 (Tozawa Chuzo)
약관 23세의 나이에 총리상을 수상한 후 1977년 히노키 코우게이를 설립한 명장. 일왕 부부 전용 자동차･기차와 왕궁용 물품을 제작하였습니다.

토키 켄지, 카나다 미츠히로, 타니구치 히로후미 (Toki Kenji, Kanada Mitsuhiro & Taniguchi Hirofumi)
칠기공예가인 토키 켄지와 엔지니어 카나다 미츠히로는 현대 디자인과 일본 전통 공예를 결합하는 Catalyst Japan의 핵심 인사들입니다. 타니구치 히로후미는 최초로 입체 화지(和紙) 기술을 개발시킨 타니구치 아오야 와시 사장입니다.

About Adrian Cheng (b. 1979)
The cultural entrepreneur and designer graduated from Harvard University (Cum Laude) before furthering his education at Stanford Kyoto Center for Japanese Studies, where he developed a deep appreciation for Japanese culture and design. He founded K11, a museum-retail concept that combines art and commerce, and K11 Art Foundation in 2009 and 2010 dedicated to his love for art. The latter supports and incubates young emerging artists and curators in Greater China, while catapulting them to the international stage. He is a Board Member of MoMA PS1, and a Trustee of the Royal Academy of Arts. He is currently the Vice Chairman and Creative Advisor of Nowness, a digital content platform created by LVMH. He was also conferred an Honorary Doctorate of Humanities degree from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) for his continuing contribution to the arts and cultural scene in Hong Kong. In 2016, Adrian co-designed the acclaimed high jewellery collection Le Labyrinthe Artistique that fetched over USD 3.8m in an auction. Through K11 and K11 Art Foundation, he is orchestrating an artisanal living in Greater China through Innovation, Art and Culture.

About Shigeru Uchida (1943 – 2016)
As a leading Japanese designer, Uchida engaged in diverse design projects worldwide from architectural interior, furniture and industrial design to urban planning. His major works are series of boutiques for Yohji Yamamoto, the Kobe Fashion Museum, the Tea Rooms ‘Ji-an, So-an, Gyo-an’. He was also involved in the overall concept design for hotels including Hotel Il Palazzo, Oriental Hotel Hiroshima, The Gate Hotel Kaminarimon and Sapporo Grand Hotel. His works are held in permanent collections at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Conran Foundation, M+ Museum and others. He was a recipient of numerous prestigious awards including the Mainichi Design Award and Education Minister’s Art Encouragement Award, and was honoured with the Medal of Purple Ribbon and the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rossette.

CRAFTSMAN
About Chuzo Tozawa (b. 1944)
Having won the Prime Minister’s Award in Japan for craftsmanship at the young age of 23, furniture craftsman Chuzo Tozawa founded his own practice Hinoki Kougei in 1977 and has since worked for a range of prestigious clients including Charlotte Perriand, Peter Cook, Alessandro Mendini and Arata Isozakia. In the 2000s, he was commissioned to craft furnishings for the automobile and train car of Japan’s Emperor and Empress; he later created furnishings for the Imperial Palace, as well as reproductions of national treasures. Tozawa-san currently runs his studio with his son Tadanori Tozawa.
