PKM 갤러리는 2017 년 12 월 1일부터 2018년 1월 6일까지 캐나다 출신의 작가 브렌트 웨든(Brent Wadden, b.1979)의 개인전 을 개최한다. 본 전시는 최근 세계 미술계에서 주목 받고 있는 젊은 작가 중 한 명인 브렌트 웨든의 독창적인 작품 세계를 한국에 최초로 소개하는 자리로서, 타피스트리 페인팅 신작 12 점을 선보일 예정이다.

브렌트 웨든은 캐나다 노바스코샤(Nova Scotia, CA)에서 출생하였으며, 현재는 벤쿠버와 베를린를 오가며 작업 중이 다. 작업의 시작부터 마무리까지 작가가 직접 온전히 실을 엮어내 만든 작은 직물 조각들이 압도적인 크기의 화면 속에 기하학적인 도형과 인상적인 구도로 발현되는 것이 그 특유의 표현 양식이다. 작가는 회화, 일러스트레이션, 직 조(weaving) 이 3 가지 요소들을 결합한 그의 작품을 통해 각 장르간의 경계를 넘어서면서도 역설적으로 각 장르 자 체의 특성을 살려 현대미술의 맥락 안에서 신선한 작품세계를 구현하고 있다. 작가는 최근 자신의 작업 활동에 관하 여 “직조(weaving)는 깊은 명상과 육체적 부담을 요하는 작업 과정으로 이를 통해 내 에너지의 편린들을 포괄한다.” 라고 밝히며, 그의 작업 형식을 정의하였다. 그의 작품은 현대미술과 전통적 공예의 경계를 허물며, 직조(weaving)의 과정을 통해 가시적인 노동의 결과물로 물질성을 그대로 드러내며 새로운 시각으로 추상표현주의에 질문을 던진다.

브렌트 웨든은 최근 정치적 상황이나 세계 정세에 대한 반응으로 부정적이고 음울한 아이디어에 관심을 기울여왔으 나, 이번 전시의 주제 “카르마(Karma)”를 통하여 상황에 따라 그것이 긍정적 혹은 부정적인 의미를 함축하며 표변 할 수 있다는 이념적 중립성에 주목하였다. 작가는 이번 전시 작업들의 주 색감인 핑크색과 초록색을 가시적인 에너 지의 스펙트럼 속 긍정적인 힘을 내포한 컬러로 재해석하여 작품 속에서 감각적으로 그려내었다.

브렌트 웨든은 벤쿠버 현대미술 갤러리(Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver)에서 개인전을 앞두고있으며, 최근 군마 현대 미술관(The Museum of Modern Art, Gunma), 앨버타 아트 갤러리(Art Gallery of Alberta, Edmonton), 캠든 아트 센터(Camden Arts Centre, London), 쿠리치바 비엔날레 2017(The Curitiba Biennial 2017) 에서 작품을 선보였다.

브렌트 웨든은 베를린의 페레스 프로젝트(Peres Projects, Berlin), 런던의 페이스 갤러리(Pace Gallery, London), 뉴욕 의 미셸 이네스 앤 나쉬 갤러리(Mitchell-Innes & Nash Gallery, New York) 브뤼셀과 파리의 알민 레흐 갤러리(Almine Rech Gallery, Brussels and Paris) 등 전세계 굴지의 전시 공간에서 개인전을 개최하였으며, 그의 작품은 세계 미술계 에서 막강한 영향력을 행사하는 컬렉터인 루벨가 컬렉션(Rubell Family Collection, Miami)을 포함하여 마르시아노 아 트 파운데이션(The Marciano Art Foundation, Los Angeles), 루이비통 재단(The LVMH Foundation, Paris) 등지에 소장 되어있다.


PKM Gallery is pleased to announce “Karma”, a solo exhibition of the Canadian artist Brent Wadden (b. 1979) from December 1st, 2017 to January 6th, 2018. This exhibition is the first solo exhibition of Brent Wadden in Korea, as well as a premiere of the artist’s twelve new woven paintings.

Brent Wadden, originally from Nova Scotia, Canada, works between Berlin and Vancouver and is known for his hand-loomed, woven paintings. The paintings invoke bold colors and geometric forms while at the same time accentuating the artist’s labor. These handwoven artworks hold together the characteristics of painting, drawing and textile weaving, transcending their boundaries while combining the different genres together which ultimately form Wadden’s unique ‘painting’. According to Wadden, the weavings “retain a kind of energy which partially comes from the laborious process of making, which is both meditative and physically demanding.” Influenced by abstract expressionism, Wadden’s woven painting is an output of tangible labor that blurs the lines between traditional folk art and contemporary fine art while at the same time underscoring the tactility and materiality of weaving.

The exhibition title “Karma” derives from how the artist has recently been leaning towards negative or grim ideas in reaction to the current political climate and world affairs. The artist finds it interesting how ‘karma’ can be neutral and can cross over between either positive or negative connotations. In relation to this contemplation, the artist produced his new series of works centering around the colors of pink and green, as the artist views both pink and green as positive colors on the spectrum of energy, focusing on the affirmative aspect of ‘karma’.

Brent Wadden’s current and upcoming museum exhibitions include an upcoming solo exhibition at the Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver as well as exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, Gunma, Japan, the Art Gallery of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada, the Camden Arts Centre, London, United Kingdom, and the Curitiba Biennial, 2017 at the Oscar Niemeyer Museum, Curitiba, Brazil.

Wadden’s works have been exhibited in numerous solo exhibitions around the world including at Peres Projects in Berlin, Pace Gallery in London, Mitchell Innes and Nash Gallery in New York as well as Almine Rech Gallery in Brussels and Paris. Wadden’s works can be found in public collections worldwide including the Rubell Family Collection in Miami, the Marciano Art Foundation in Los Angeles, and the LVMH Foundation in Paris.
