Gallery LVS는 2021년 1월 14일부터 2월 2일까지 서태경 (Tk Suh)의 개인전 Boogie Nights를 개최한다. 이번 전시 Boogie Nights는 서태경의 ‘밤’의 경험들을 바탕으로 한 유화 및 드로잉 작업들을 전시한다.

서태경은 회화를 통해 작가와 작품간의 대화를 기록한다.
작가는 즉각적이고 감정적인 붓질로 캔버스를 채워 나가며, 튜브에서 바로 짜내어 그리기, 나이프로 긁어내기, 거꾸로 그리기 등 여러 회화적 방법으로 발생하는 형태와 이미지들에 귀를 기울인다. 다양한 회화적 테크닉에서 파생되는 예상치 못한 이미지들은 그림속에서 서로 충돌하여 회화만이 가질 수 있는 네어레이티브와 감정선을 구축한다. 우리가 매순간마다 변화하고 느끼는 감정들과 같이 서태경은 정물과 인물, 그리고 추상적 이미지를 변주하여 겹겹이 쌓아 올리며, 각각의 그림이 복합적인 감정으로 관객의 다방면적인 접근과 경험을 작품을 통해 나누고자 한다.

이번 전시 Boogie Nights는 작가의 시카고 유학 생활 후 돌아온 서울의 밤에서 느낀 인상과 경험들을 비춰내는 작업들로 전시된다. 그림 속 풍경은 대체로 밝게 빛나는 밤을 배경으로 네온사인들로 반짝이는 서울의 밤을 연상시키며, 서로 안부를 묻지 않는 행인들과 같이 그림 속 인물들은 정확한 신원과 상황을 설명하지 않은 채 차가운 시선으로 그림 밖을 바라본다. 작가는 이와 같은 그림 속 특징들을 통해 우리가 타인에게 갖는 궁금함과 두려움을 동시에 느끼게 하여, 관객으로부터 회화적 대화를 유도하고자 하였다.

서태경은 School of Art Institute of Chicago에서 학사를 취득 후 Korean Cultural Center of Chicago, Gallery No One, Heaven Gallery 등지에서 다양한 개인전 및 단체전을 가졌으며, 이번 전시는 작가의 국내 첫 개인전시이다.


Gallery LVS is pleased to announce Tk Suh’s solo exhibition Boogie Nights. The Exhibition opens from Thursday, January 14th, and continues until February 2nd, 2021. In this exhibition, Tk Suh shows selected paintings and works on paper inspired by his nighttime experiences.

In his recent paintings, Tk Suh records the conversation between himself and the work.
Suh uses visceral and improvisational brushstrokes, applies the colors straight from the tube, scrapes the paint off with palette knife, and rotates the canvas during his process of paintings. His constant confrontations with unexpected forms and shapes during his painting process allow him to freely invent the images in his pictorial structure. Suh explores the conflicts between different images of still life, figuration, and abstraction and constructs his own painterly narratives and complex emotions in each work.

The exhibition, Boogie Nights, shows the selected works that reflect his impression and experiences of coming back to Seoul after his study in Chicago. Luminous colored backgrounds in his recent works recall numberless neon signs in Seoul, and the figures are depicted obscure as the bystanders on the street. With these reminiscence, Suh’s paintings capture the atmosphere in Seoul, and trigger both curiosity and fearfulness from the viewers as they confront the strangers on the nighttime street.

Tk Suh graduated BFA from School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and exhibited at Korean Cultural Center of Chicago, Gallery No One, Heaven Gallery, and etc. The exhibition, Boogie Nights, is his first solo exhibition in Korea.
