The World World World World >

(The World World World World)》를 개최한다.

The Untitled Void is pleased to announce the opening of “The World World World World,” a solo exhibition of works by artist Casper Kang held from July 2nd to August 22nd, 2021. The artist’s first solo show in three years, “The World...” includes over 60 unique works showcasing the evolution of Kang’s consistent exploration of the various properties of hanji (traditional Korean handmade paper).

For Kang, a second-generation Korean-Canadian, what began as a kind of fond curiosity about the culture of his motherland has, over time, been replaced by a sense of loss as he has grown more familiar with modern Korean society, characterized by its embrace of the new over its veneration of tradition. Indeed, the development and trajectory of this specific emotional journey reveals itself in the work. Where Kang’s early paintings are figurative reinterpretations of Korean culture and imagery, as his perspective transforms so too does his focus, shifting to the materials themselves rather than the forms they might depict. “Mourning Glory,” in which hanji is used to obscure an image of an earlier painting, is one representative work of this transition. Beginning in 2017, Kang left all forms behind in favor of tearing, burning, crushing, bleaching, fraying — in a word, transforming — hanji, privileging materiality and arriving at abstraction.

Through this reinterpretation and exploration of the material plane, Kang’s works continue to evolve organically. Exhibited for the first time at The Untitled Void, pieces like “The World,” “The World,” “Yes, I Like To Know Exactly What It Is I Don’t Like,” “Object 1,” “Object 2,” and “Object 3” are all sculptural forays into the possibilities of hanji, the very material so foundational to his practice, that offer new glimpses into the artist’s aesthetic vision.

Casper Kang’s current work centers around the futility of all things, up to and including the culture of his own motherland that is still so precious to him. It is, after all, only through full comprehension and acceptance of such meaninglessness that we can ever hope to reach real meaning. In this sense, by quite literally deconstructing hanji, a medium of traditional Korean art, the artist empties it of all its cultural symbolism and themes. After all it is only then, rendered subject through this reversal, that the empty figure can truly know desire — the desire to be filled with the meaninglessness of the world.
