Gallery Hyundai is pleased to announce Whoseum of Who?, the first exhibition of British-Japanese artist Simon Fujiwara at the gallery from April 5 to May 21. Building on a series centered on his cartoon character Who the Bær, Gallery Hyundai will present over 40 new works that include drawings, videos, paintings and site-specific installations.

‘Who’ the Bær is a cartoon character that the artist developed during the first pandemic lockdown as a ‘Dada-esque response to an increasingly absurd and incomprehensible world.’ Fujiwara’s character takes the form of an identity-free cartoon bear. With seemingly no race, no gender and no sexuality, Who is only recognisable by their golden heart and impossibly long tongue. Doomed to forever be ‘only 2 dimensional’ and trapped in their status as an image, Who the Bær poses earnest questions on the nature of a ‘true and authentic self’ in an era of hyper technological mediation. Since it’s debut in 2021 at the Fondazione Prada in Milan, exhibitions of Who the Bær have traveled to Kunstinstituut Melly, Rotterdam and Prada Aoyama, Tokyo; and the series has been presented across multiple media, from painting and sculpture to full scale installations, stop frame animations and a children’s book.

갤러리현대는 오는 4월 5일부터 5월 21일까지 베를린을 기반으로 세계적 활동을 펼치는 사이먼 후지와라(Simon Fujiwara)의 개인전 《Whoseum of Who?》를 개최한다. 이번 전시에는 작가의 만화 캐릭터 연작인 의 회화, 영상, 장소 특정적 설치 등 40여 점을 대거 공개한다.

연작에는 '후(Who)'라는 이름의 만화 곰 캐릭터가 주인공으로 등장한다. 작가는 팬데믹으로 인한 첫 봉쇄 기간을 지내며 '점점 더 부조리하고 이해할 수 없는 세계에 대한 다다적 반응'으로 이 연작을 시작한다. 새하얀 털과 황금빛 심장, 엄청나게 긴 혀를 가진 곰은 인종, 젠더, 섹슈얼리티 등의 정체성에서 자유로운 캐릭터로 완성되었다. 작가는 2차원 이미지라는 점 이외에는 명확한 특징이 없는 이 캐릭터를 통해, 이미지에 집착하는 동시대인에게 '진정한 자아는 무엇인가'라는 묵직한 질문을 던진다. 연작은 2021년 밀라노에 있는 프라다 재단에서 열린 개인전 에서 첫 공개된 이후, 로테르담의 쿤스트인스티튜트 멜리(Kunstinstituut Melly), 도쿄의 프라다 아오야마(Prada Aoyama) 등 유럽과 아시아의 주요 기관과 갤러리에서 회화와 조각, 설치작품, 스톱 프레임 애니메이션, 아동 도서 등 새로운 매체와 모습으로 소개되었다.
