Post World War II Japan saw drastic changes in the conditions for housing construction. The air raids of WWII burnt many Japanese cities to the ground. With desperate need for housing, the government adopted policies such as the Licensed Architect Act in 1950 that encouraged individuals to obtain their own lands and houses and thereby presented opportunities for architecture at an unprecedented scale. “The Japanese House: Architecture and Life after 1945” examines the architectural output of these policies with a selection of 75 domestic homes by 56 Japanese architects/groups through more than 400 archival materials including models, plans, photographs, and videos. Structured around 13 themes including “Prototype and Mass-production,” “Earthy Concrete” and “Critique on Family,” the show highlights the characteristics of Japan’s housing construction and considers the impact of history, society, location, environment, and personal ties on the careers of some of Japan’s most iconic architects. The exhibition also includes a 1:1 model of Kiyoshi Seike’s 1952 design for Professor Saito, said to have been highly regarded by German architect and founder of the Bauhaus School Walter Gropius (b. 1883-1969). The model includes reproductions of some of the structure’s original furniture and invites visitors to walk inside. This exhibition was previously shown at MAXXI, National Museum of the 21st Century Arts, Rome in 2016, and at the Barbican Centre in London in 2017.
