추가정보

정화백은 우리 미술의 흐름을 알아보는데 반드시 언급해야 할 주요 작가 중 한 명이다. 다시 말해 그는 50년대 후반 이후 전개되어온 현대미술에 중추적인 역할을 했고 60년대, 70년대를 건너 최근까지 큰 영향을 미쳐왔다. 정상화씨의 초기 작품 경향을 한마디로 말하면, 앙포르멜로 요약된다. 58년의 한국현대작가초대전(조선일보사 주최), 62년의 악뛰엘전, 63년의 세계문화자유회의 초대전 등의 전시들을 거치면서 그가 가장 주목했고 심혈을 쏟은 문제는 전후의 어두운 사회적, 정신적 분위기를 심층적으로 표현할 수 있을까 하는 것이었다.

정상화의 화면엔 일정하게 덮혀진 색층만 있을 뿐 아무 것도 없다. 아무것도 없다는 것은 그림에 따라 다니는 어떤 의미도 없다는 것이다. 그렇다고 제스쳐에 의한 일정한 표현의 설정도 찾을 수 없다. 그리고 있으면서도 그림이 없는 그림, 다소 역설적인 상황 속에 서야만 그의 화면은 이해된다. 화면이 비어있다는 것은 보는 것 자체를 거부하는 것이다. 단지 거기엔 침묵이 강요될 뿐이다. 미니멀리즘의 화면이 그렇다. 미니멀리즘의 화면 앞에선 누구나 명상의 세계로 갈 것을 준비하지 않을 수 없다. 그러나 정상화의 화면은 일반적인 미니멀리즘에서와 같이 침묵만이 강요되지 않는다. 오히려 그의 화면 앞에 서면 이제 막 말을 시작해야한다는 은밀한 지시가 있다. 물론 이 경우에 있어 말은 소리내어 하는 말이 아니다. 숨소리를 죽인 조용조용한 말, 소근거리는 말이다. 그것은 그의 화면이 무기적인 평면이 아니라 숨쉬는 지표, 유기적인 표면임을 말해주는 것이다.
