추가정보

정상화(1932–)는 1970년대 한국 미술계에 대두한 단색조 경향을 대표하는 작가 중 한 명이다. 대학 졸업 후 ‘한국현대미술가협회’와 ‘악튀엘’ 등의 단체에 참여했으며, 이후 프랑스(1967)와 일본(1969)으로 건너가 작품 활동을 전개했다. 초기에는 천의 구김을 활용하여 작품 표면의 평면성을 파괴하거나 두터운 물감층의 마티에르를 강조하는 앵포르멜 경향의 작업을 선보였으나, 1970년대부터 《무제》 연작으로 대표되는 단색조의 작업으로 전환했다. 이 시기부터 현재까지 정상화가 지속적으로 고수해오고 있는 제작방식은 ‘뜯어내기’와 ‘메우기’이다. 작가는 캔버스에 징크물감으로 초벌을 칠한 다음, 그것이 완전히 마를 때까지 캔버스를 규칙적인 간격으로 접어 표면에 격자형태의 균열이 생기도록 한다. 그 후 화면의 균열에 의하여 생성된 무수한 네모꼴의 형태로부터 징크물감을 떼어내고, 그 자리를 아크릴물감으로 여러 겹 메운다. 행위를 수없이 반복하고 그 행위 자체가 작품을 규정짓는다는 점에서 《무제》의 제작과정은 그 자체로 작품이라고 할 수 있다.

반복된 행위의 흔적은 1982년 제작된 〈무제 82–7〉의 화면에서도 드러난다. 이 작품을 멀리서 볼 때는 은은한 백색을 띈 사각형의 캔버스이나, 자세히 들여다보면 발견되는 수많은 작은 사각형을 통해 입체감과 질감을 고스란히 느낄 수 있다. 네모난 균열들은 전통 창의격자무늬를 연상시키기도 하는데, 캔버스의 평면에 질감과 리듬감을 더한다. 이러한 결과를 얻기 위해 노동집약적으로 행해진 뜯어내기와 메우기는 동양적 정신성, 즉 자기 수행과 명상을 통해 깨달음을 얻기 위한 행위이기도 하다. 잔잔하면서도 규칙적인, 그러나 기계적이기보다는 유기적인 반복을 보여주는 그의 화면은 자연스러운 질서를 통한 안정감을 표출한다.
