인사말

국립공원 무등산 자락에 위치한 ‘무등현대미술관’에 아직도 겨울이 채 가시지 않아 추위가 느껴지는 3月 어느 날.
청바지에 잠바차림의 낯모르는 사람이 찾아왔다.
이분이 바로 김용욱 선생이다.
첫 눈에도 둥글둥글 모나지 않아 보이는 외모에 순수한 인상이 천진한 아이 같아 보였다.
스스로 사진을 좀 찍어봤는데 여기 미술관에서 전시를 하고 싶다는 것이다.
오래지 않은 경력에 작년 서울 인사동에서 첫 개인전을 했다는 사업가에 정기 사진 교육을 거의 받지 않은 사람이다.
조금은 황당했지만 큰 가방에서 조심스럽게 꺼내놓은 자료를 보고 호감을 느끼지 않을 수 없었다.
작품을 보기 전에 완벽하게 준비한 자료와 자기 작품을 아주 소중하게 아끼는 마음이 흠뻑 배어있어 관심이 갔다.
서양화가인 내가 보기에 그의 작품은 회화적이고 무척 아름답다.
자연을 요약하고 절제 있는 시선으로 보고, 그만이 느끼는 서정성을 독특한 기법으로 표현 했으며 개성이 엿보였다.

그는 서두르지 않고 꼭 필요한 이야기만을 또박또박 얘기하는 겸허한 사람이다.

서울 종로구 통의동에 있는 대림미술관은 근래에 우리나라 사립미술관에서 가장 앞서가는 국제적인 전시와 엄청난 관람객을 끌어 모으는 좋은 미술관이다.
그가 대림미술관에서 열리고 있는 ‘How to Make a Book with Steidl : 슈타이들’展을 하고 있는 세계적인 퍼블리셔(Publisher)를 만났다는 것이다.
슈타이틀 진행 북 크리틱 : Show Me Your Book 참가자 모집( “Show Me Your Book" 은 살아있는 아트북의 전설 슈타이들의 책 제작에 대한 노하우와 그의 장인정신을 배움과 동시에, 그가 직접 여러분들의 책에 대한 조언을 해주는 뜻 깊은 자리를 만들고자 기획 되었습니다.)에 자료를 접수시켰고 선정되어 인쇄에 관한 교육을 종일 받고 도록 만드는 개인지도를 받았다는 것이다.
나는 여기서 많은 생각을 하게 되었다.
전업 작가, 이름이 크게 알려진 큰 작가, 작품을 많이 파는 인기작가, 공부를 많이 한 전문가.....

이런 사람들을 조용히 바라보며 흔들리지 않고 자기 길을 내실 있게 걸어가고 있는 평범해 보이는 아마추어 작가 속에 우리는 진정한 예술인을 가끔 만나게 된다.

봄빛이 화창한 지난 5月3일 오후.
가끔씩 나타나 전시장을 둘러보던 그가 불쑥 나타났다.
내 개인적인 전화가 길어져서 미안하게 생각 했는데 꽤 긴 시간을 기다렸는데도 지루한 기색이 없고 그의 얼굴에는 미소가 가득했다.

“관장님 용꿈 꾸었습니다”.
“용꿈은 쉽게 말하는게 아니야!”
“아니요! 관장님이랑 나눠야지요.”

얘기인즉 제일교포 하정웅 선생님을 만났다는 것이다.
하정웅 선생님은 세계적인 미술작품 수집가로서 우리나라 미술관에 많은 작품을 기증하는 내가 존경하는 사람이다.

작품을 본 하정웅 선생님께서 기회가 되면 20여점 작품으로 하정웅 컬렉션에 동참하고 전시공간도 말씀하셨다는 것이다.
무려 3시간 남짓 많은 조언을 해주셨고, 여러 가지로 힘을 주셨다고 한다.

용꿈은 확실한 용꿈이다.
그분은 지금까지 수많은 작가들을 만났고, 그를 거쳐 간 작가들이 얼마나 많은가.....
하정웅 선생께 인정을 받았다는 것은 확실한 행운이다.

아이처럼 좋아하는 그의 얼굴이 내내 내 기억 속에 남아 있다.
이 경이로운 사실에 나도 같이 행복했다.

그의 작품에 대한 열정과 작품을 소중히 여기는 그의 겸손한 인품이 좋은 작가가 되리라는 확신을 갖게 한다.
그리고 그를 처음 알아봐준 나도 꽤나 괜찮은 사람 같은 생각이 들어 내심 흐뭇하다.

그가 표현하는 예술세계는 자연의 순간순간의 변화를 응집하고 요약하며 단순화시킨다.
이러한 실험과정의 결과로 나타난 그의 작품은 누구나 공감할 수 있는 서정성과 경이로운 표현을 동시에 갖고 있다.
그의 작품을 보고 있으면 치유의 개념도 있다는 생각이 든다.

이번 무등현대미술관에서 기획된 김용욱 선생의 초대 전시에서 사진 예술을 감상하고 사랑하는 귀한 시간이 되시길 바랍니다.

It was still a chilly day of early March. A man with blue jean and windbreaker came to visit me. He was with a round face unshaven beard but looked quite innocent. He said that he has been taking photographs and wanted to hold an exhibition in my gallery. He was an entrepreneur with a few years of experience in photography who had his first solo exhibition last year in Seoul. He had no professional education in photography. At first I was disconcerted but when I saw him carefully taking out his well prepared portfolio from a big bag I started to have a good feeling about him. He drew my attention even before showing me his portfolio just by the attitude of his sincerity towards his works. His works were picturesque and beautiful to me being a western style painter. His works expressed in the form of simplified nature and his lyrical feeling in his own unique way. He gave me an impression of being humble and calm yet clearly expressing what he needs to say.

One of the private galleries in Seoul by the name ‘Daelim Gallery’ in Tongeui-dong, Jongno-gu is famous for good international exhibitions attracting many people. And he has met a world renown publisher at the exhibition, ‘How to Make a Book with Steidl’ at Daelim Gallery.
He applied to a special event, a ‘Book Critique by Steidl’ - ‘Show Me Your Book’ - and got selected as a participant where he received the personal training on printing and advice on how to make photo collection books from the legend of art book publisher, Steidl. At that point, many thoughts about various types of artists came to my mind – professionals, renown artists, well-selling popular artists and scholastic artists etc...
Amongst all kinds of artists one seldom meets a real artist who is not swayed by the fame and wealth of those artists but only trying hard to deepen one’s world of art.

In the sunny afternoon of May 3 he suddenly dropped by my gallery.
I was on a personal call for long that I was sorry to make him wait. Despite of the long waiting he greeted me with big smile on his face.
“Director Jung, I had a dragon dream, an auspicious one!!”
“You should not talk about a dragon dream.“ I said.
“No! I should share it with you, Director Jung.”
He meant a dragon dream by meeting a world renown art collector, Ha, Jung Woung who is well known donor of art pieces to Korean galleries for that I respect him much. When Mr. Ha saw the works of his, he suggested to Kim, Yong Wook to participate in his collection exhibition with 20 pieces. He talked to him for three hours and he was inspired by his advices and invitation. Sure it was a dragon dream. Ha, Jung Woung has met so many artists whom became good artists by him. Kim, Yong Wook was lucky to be recognized by him. At this astonishing lucky encounter I was happy for him. His thrilled child-look on his face with his innocent smile will linger for a long time in my memory. I am sure that he will be a good artist with his passion and humble attitude of sincerity and care. And I am proud of myself being able to recognize his talent.

His world of photography is expressed by simplifying and condensing the momentarily changes of nature into a piece of work. Thru the course of this experimental work he can express and share the lyrical and wondrous feeling with the viewers. I think his works also contain the concept of healing, too.
I hope you enjoy seeing Kim’s works at the invitation exhibition by Moodeung Modern and Contemporary Art Gallery.
