  • Press Release

AMC Lab presents its very first exhibition, Up Close Yet Unfamiliar. This exhibition is curated to question what art means to people. In this fast-changing, modern society, new trends form and disappear quickly. News from half a world away is instantaneously delivered through SNS, but due to the massive flood of available information, it is easily forgotten. In addition, many people record their daily lives through SNS, but these records are shared tremendously online, making them eventually meaningless. What does art mean in an era in which both spiritual healing books, which comfort stressed-out people, and self-improvement books, which provide tactics to become better equipped for the future, are found in best-seller book rankings?

Everyone has different answers to the following questions: what is art and what does art mean to them. AMC Lab would like to show how art makes people rethink their routines. The artists participating in the Up Close Yet Unfamiliar exhibition are different ages, nationalities, and genders, and although they have developed their own visual languages through different mediums, such as painting, oriental painting, photography, and film, they share one thing in common: all their works transform mundane life into unexpected scenes.

Byung Jae Oh(b.1974) believes that the world is formed by perspectives, not by objects. In many cases, objects are interpreted solely from an artist’s viewpoint. However, Oh focuses on “looking at things together with other people.” Because the artist considers others’ viewpoints in addition to his own, Oh provides a new understanding of the concept of “looking at things,” therefore pursuing a society in which various perspectives coexist. He takes subjects from a daily life such as red brick houses and bookshelves. The subjects in his works are likely to spread out beyond the canvas as he employs the drawing technique of reverse perspective. These characteristics give his paintings an unreal effect. Oh has held solo shows at the 63 SKY ART Gallery (2015), Space BM (2014), Noam Gallery (2011), Kumho Museum of Art (2006), and Art Space Pool (2005). In 2016, his solo exhibition, Unfolding Spaces, was held at PMQ, Hong Kong. He has also participated in group exhibitions at major galleries and museums, including the Seoul Museum of Art, Doosan Gallery, and Park Ryu Sook Gallery. Oh received his BA from Seoul National University and received a MA in Fine Art from Goldsmiths College, University of London.

Eunsil Lee(b.1983) is a remarkable contemporary ink painter who often uses Korean traditional buildings, humans, and animals as her subject matter. At first glance, her works are sophisticated, contemporary ink paintings with a modern twist. Typically, ink paintings are symbols of loftiness and refinement and emphasize tradition and authority. Lee combats viewers’ stereotypes concerning ink paintings with scenes that expose social taboos, such as depicting sexual and excretory activities and organs, encouraging the audience look deeply at her unfamiliar scenes. For example, when viewers must face animals’ bold intercourse in front of traditional Korean houses, their existing beliefs about ink paintings are challenged. These provocative factors are not the only approach Lee employs to expose social restrictions and rigid hierarchy. From erotic landscapes and impotent genitals to sexual intercourse between tigers, she attempts to include elements that reveal her identity as a female artist. Lee uses traditional techniques to show a young ink painter’s contemporary touch. Eunsil Lee has held solo shows at the Doosan Gallery New York (2016), Project Space SARUBIA (2010), and Art Space Pool (2009). She has also participated in notable group exhibitions at museums, including the Kumho Museum of Art, American University Museum (Washington D.C., USA), and Leeum Samsung Museum of Art. She received both a BA and an MA in Fine Art from Seoul National University.

Silas Fong(b.1985) from Hong Kong works with various mediums, including video, installation, and photography. He identifies and reveals overlooked details in everyday life, and thus public spaces, such as elevators, escalators, and subway platforms, become spaces for unusual experiences. For example, Fong captures pedestrians on escalators and pauses the screen, as if stopping their time. His attempt to retain his own pace and time by recording everyday life is contagious to viewers. When an audience encounters his works, they also pause for a moment and look back on their daily experiences. Silas Fong has held solo exhibitions at the Hong-ti Art Center in Busan (2016), Goethe-Institut Hong Kong (2016), and Gallery Exit in Hong Kong (2011). He has participated in group exhibitions at international galleries and museums, including the City Gallery Wellington, Soka Art Center, Saatchi Gallery London, and Art Space Pool. He has also participated in international exhibitions, including Dresden Cynetart (2013), the 11th Seoul International New Media Festival (2011), and Liverpool Biennial (2010). Silas Fong currently works as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Photography at Chung-Ang University, Korea.
