자연을 관조하고 노래하는 서정시인
주지하듯이 김재학은 대상의 재현에 충실한 전형적인 구상미술 작가이다. 현대미술과 전통적 아카데미즘 미술이 양분된 화단의 현실 속에서도 많은 미술애호가들에게 널리 사랑을 받고 있다. 그의 필치는 감각적인 리듬에 따라 움직이면서 자연적 대상 자체를 충실히 묘사하면서도 자연스럽게 전달하게 된다. 특히 여백을 처리함에 있어 그것이 적절한 관조와 사유의 공간이 될 수 있도록 하는 데서 대상의 사소함과 왜소함을 또한 극복하게 된다. 대상의 재현성을 필요이상으로 훼손하지 않고, 구체적이면서도 작가 자신의 개성적이고 감각적인 요소들을 적절히 반영해 내는 점이 작가의 장점이다. 사실 작가의 화면은 그렇게 복잡하게 구성된 적이 거의 없다. 또한 강렬한 원색을 즐겨 쓰거나 일필휘지의 호방한 필치를 과시하지도 않는다. 소박하고 가지런해 보이는 화면의 구성 속에서 한 편의 서정시를 담담하게 노래하고 있는 것이다.일각에서는 작가의 작품을 극사실주의적인 양식으로 보는 시각들도 있다. 물론 사실적인 재현 방법만 놓고 보면 그렇게 분류된다고 하여 잘못된 것은 없어 보인다. 다만 예의 극사실주의가 대상을 보다 기계적 엄밀성과 차디찬 시선으로 바라보는 것에 비해, 작가는 대상에 대해 시선으로가 아니라 가슴으로 따뜻하게 품고 있다는 점에서 상당한 차이를 느끼게 한다. 작가가 묘사력을 바탕으로 하는 그림을 끝내 버리지 못하고 고집하는 것은 다름 아닌 자연에 대한 애정과 연민을 떨쳐버릴 수 없기 때문이다. 작가는 그리되 꿈꾸는 것과 노래하는 것을 가미한 그리기를 견지하고 있는 것이다. 이재언 (미술평론가)


A Lyric Poet Contemplating and Singing of Nature
As is well known, Jae-hak Kim is a typical figurative artist who is faithful to the representation of objects. He is widely loved by many art lovers despite the division of Korean art into contemporary art and traditional academic art. His brush strokes move in accordance with instinctive rhythms, faithfully depicting natural objects themselves. In particular, he allows the negative space to become that of proper contemplation and thought, thus overcoming the triviality and diminutiveness of the objects. His strength lies in his aptitude to give life to his own individual and instinctive elements, while maintaining the reproducibility of the object. In fact, the artist’s canvas composition has rarely been complicated. He also avoids the use of intense primary colors or vigorous and dynamic brush strokes. His canvas sings a lyric poem calmly in a simple yet elegant composition. Some people find there to be Hyperrealism in his work. Of course, considering only the realistic method of representation, there seems to be nothing wrong with such classification. However, while Hyperrealism sees the object with a more mechanical rigor and detached gaze, Jae-hak Kim does not see the object with an observer’s gaze, but instead embraces it with warmth. In this respect, there is a significant difference between the two. The reason why he insists on painting based on representative skills is that he cannot cast off his love and compassion for nature.
